Focus this week and the last of the season goes out to my "stab" at closing communication for our 15 year old Oswego Pro/Am. We had closed communication for around 10 years, ran pretty smooth with no issues I recall. Our rules were since unified after input from coordination on the west end of the lake and coincidentally after a coordination change from our Oswego Pro/Am. Let it be known I do not over-look the prep/leg work that goes into keeping our Pro/Am's healthy by any of the current committee members. The work behind the scenes is daunting and overwhelming and many participants do seem to over-look this. A-TOM-MIK has been a proud sponsor and participant for most all of the Pro/Am's for about 6 years, I have been a part of the Oswego event since induction on many levels, observed in the beginning, involvement since 1999 and sponsorship since 2003. The Oswego event grew each year in participation to the highest level of 78 teams since unification. From that point to now we have struggled with growth, I feel the Oswego Pro/Am can run with No Communication without reprocution or issues and would offer a more level playing field that would entice more entrants and offer a healthier event (Ultimate goal). My work is cut out for me being up against "those making the rules", wish me luck, I will do my best and try not to let those down who are counting on me. 1st Step Notifying past and present Oswego entrants of my attempt (forum threads, E Mails, phone calls) (With your help-please bring this to the attention of any team that has participated in an Oswego Pro/Am) 2nd Step Notifying Oswego coordinator of my goal/dealings/progress 3rd Step Schooling myself on the interest I believe to be present for those who are "pro" No Communication (strong so far) 4th Step Gathering a vote from legit/valid Oswego Pro/Am teams (in process) 5th Step Collecting input on how this rule can be presented, played out, enforced, and also what the consequences would be if not followed (thinking DQ for the day), also thinking about trying to eliminate grey area on any phone/communication usage concerning an emergency, etc. 6th Step Present an amendment proposition to Dave Turner with full details for review 7th Step Have follow-up action ready if denied Current tally NO COMMUNICATION PRO 21 current or past Oswego Pro/Am team votes OPEN COMMUNICATION PRO 0 votes NO COMMUNICATION AM 11 current or past Oswego Pro/Am team votes OPEN COMMUNICATION AM 1 current or past Oswego Pro/Am team vote Total votes 33 Please keep in mind I am a very busy sole pretty much year round, I will stay in touch with this as time allows, I will be making phone calls and sending out E mails on a daily or at times a weekly basis, If I can figure out a way how to contact each and every team I have ever recognized in relation to our Oswego Pro/Am I certainly will all in due time. Do not hesitate to help me out by sending an E mail to a friend or to me on any pertinent contact info concerning past, present or potential Oswego Pro/Am teams. Also keep in mind if your vote is to keep communication open for our Oswego event I will honor your vote sincerely without question !!! Note: I have received an additional E mail from another current and past well-known Pro/Am sponsor who is also more than willing to lay his name on the line and help us out, he also is in strong favor for closing communication. Fishing is hot one day and non-existent the next, sort of odd but then again it is a fragile time for us big lake guys. Oswego has slowed with only a few anglers around daily, I honestly have not heard much here. In front of the Salmon River still seems to be the best bet, again some days are literally hot fishing with a few captains taking limits who are finishing out their seasons. Then the next day it slows and it is very tough to get a rod to move? I guess with it being that time of the year and having different variables effecting our King's and Coho's it should be expected for runs of fish to be "hanging" out in front then making a heavy run up the estuary. This will happen for a few more weeks until the majority of King's and Coho's have committed to their drive. J-Plug's and Lyman's have been good early with a mix of more of them along with attractor flies making up the spreads throughout the day. A white blade/mtn dew tape style attractor with a glow B Fly or a TG fly has been mentioned a few times. Sap sucker type/green glow, yellow belly have been producing for the plugs. I haven't heard much as I haven't poked around to much lately to sport some info on what goes on at night but I am sure there is night fishing taking place as well in front of the Salmon River, glow evil eyes are usually a good bet for the drift boats. Oswego River as well as the Salmon have both been producing catches of more King's and Coho's along with Rainbows and Browns in fair numbers. I may not update further from this point as the season winds down, thanks to all for everything !!! ![]() Sunday September 13, 2009
Oswego still tough this am, however temps were getting ever so slightly better. Hat Trick managed there couple for their am trip doing harbor patrol. We did hear from a few that some of the trollers in front of the Salmon River enjoyed a blood bath of Kings and Coho's this am, this sort of started last evening as the Cold Steel boys had an awesome pm trip with many Coho's working the short water. Sounds like there are ample fish around, get at em if you can. Inside 60 fow the best. Saturday September 12, 2009
Oswego harbor patrol continues, Kings being taken from the lighthouse to the gas docks, not a ton but a few. J-plugs and attractors is what we have heard, as I passed Hat Trick this am at 5:45 on my way to the mouth of the Salmon River they had just boated one in the dark nearing the gap. Others taken throughout the morning on the sap sucker, a King or 2 per boat. The Crazy Bitch put in 30 miles round trip and fished the mouth of the Salmon River today. We went 6 for 9 with 2 Coho's, no shortage of boats, WOW !!!! But I can say this, 99% of everyone was running parallel to the shoreline with very minimal conflicts, we did not lose one fish due to another boat, only had 1 boat all am try to run across the grain, I am not sure if the numerous boats are gun-shy to traffic so they simply stay clear or not but I saw plenty of courtesy with such a huge number of anglers in a tight area, pretty unreal comparing Oswego's LOC traffic with some rude seasoned anglers showing no courtesy to less traffic. My fish came on a 7 color core with a green/chartreuse Lyman (2), a white chip/hammer fly (down 24) (4), red edge trash can/TG fly (2) and another stock white chip with a standard glow hammer fly (1) other rigger down 28. My core was ran out the shute, the hottest item was down 24 ft back 25, chip/hammer fly on the 24 rigger, and my single braid diver was out 70 setting 3, (trash can rig). My daughter fought some fish, slept some, fought a few more fish and slept some more, a great day today off the Salmon River. GPS speeds ranged from 1.9 to 2.5 depending on direction. There were a lot of boats during the final weekend of the LOC out of Oswego but there were even more today off the Salon River. Kings are colored up pretty well but are fighting strong, had one take off about 200 ft of line, the Coho's have a bit more of a fresh look to them. Saw plenty of boats take Kings today, much action, well worth the trip !!! Friday September 11, 2009
God Bless those lost on 9/11 Fishing still tough, harbor patrol the norm, a few wandering around in the 100 to 150 fow area and a few others still heading off to the plant to the east. More even yet moving their boats to Mexico to fish off the Salmon River, this seems to be best out of all other options, your not going to kill them anywhere but the best averages are coming there and are ranging from 3 to 6 Kings. Working the short water from 40 to 60 and targeting the top 40 ft with mostly attractor/flies, some J-Plugs and Lymans as well mixed into most spreads. The Crazy Bitch wandered off 8 miles to the west around the 9 mile creek over 500 fow and did not see much, so I trolled my way back into 190 fow and managed a few Coho's, one off a free slider (Carmel Dolphin streak) on a 30' rigger and another off a SWR 3 color down 20 ft. (red 0/0 jensen w green/peanut fly). I spent about 3 hours for my 2 bites. Out of all the boats doing harbor patrol we heard of 4 total Kings taken out of Oswego, the 100 to 150 fow anglers may have managed just a few more, but still real slow. We need the south and easterly winds to go away real soon as we are iced out bad, 44 degrees down 30 ft our front and the best I found was 55 down 50 over 500 fow, the temps' off the Salmon River are more favorable presently. If you are going to hit Oswego this weekend the "Jim Hartigan Memorial and Roast" hosted by Tommy Germain is Saturday, (so far 80 entrants) you can pay and get in the derby at the Oswego gas shack, more food than you can eat and plenty of free A-TOM-MIK goods to boot, turkey, beef, venison, salads and deserts, all going to a great cause as we lost Jimmy Hartigan and the proceeds benefit his family !!!! Thanks to Tommy Germain for keeping the memory of his dear friend alive for all these years, I remember Jimmy and he was a great guy and an avid big lake angler just like all of us, it is a small world, stop by if you can, you will not be disappointed I assure you !!! !!! Oswego Sucks right now!!! I never went off shore last night as the winds were brutal, a few fish are being taken off the Salmon River was the report from 3 or 4 Oswego boats that ran the 16 miles as it was the only show in town (actually out of town), a few Oswego charters also did run deep today with zero results, others fished the Oswego harbor area (and that sucked too), other than that Oswego SUCKS !! right now.............. Boo Hoo Whaa Whaa...... But it will get good again !! Wednesday September 09, 2009
What a difference a day makes, wind blew NE which is the wrong direction icing us out, most boats with 1 to 2 Kings as of 8:30 this am. Just chatted with Tommy TK and he had the top of the break at 35 ft over 70 fow off the plant. Wow, not what I wanted to hear this am for sure.......... If I get time looks like I'll be changing my oil in the Crazy Bitch this afternoon and making a run off shore to see whats available, might be tough fishing for a day or two. Here is a hog taken off the Cold Steel yesterday am while they crushed them off the plant. ![]() Tuesday September 08, 2009
More fish to the east than straight out the front door, a few charters this am were struggling out front to put 2 to 4 Kings in the box but the charters that ran to the east did very well. Cold Steel took their box with a 4 person charter working 70 to 90 fow east of the 5 stacks to the green buildings. No certain items today just being over a high amount of fish taking the best counts of Kings. I did hear Andy say chrome attractors with mtn dew tapes were working. Hard fighting dark sharks making for happy clientele, blistering runs and breaking tackle the norm, we are hearing from charters daily who are busting up their gear dealing with these hard bodied nooks'. Plenty of season left it seems as success stories still coming into us, large Kings as well. Coho's too and they are mostly chromers, hefty considering all the 2 to 4 lbers we see in the spring in different areas of the lake, average size under 10 lbs. but the occasional pig Coho being taken. A lot less boats now as well, just might be one of the best times to get on the lake. I saw more congestion this season than I have witnessed in many years, it's good to see the numbers of big lake anglers but it's too bad there are a few regulars that simply refuse to practice courtesy, some feel they own the lake I guess, maybe they have squatters rights that I don't know about, lmao. Sort of a double edged sword, its great to see the huge interest on the big water but it would seem so easy to practice a bit more intelligence and keep friends or make new ones rather than piss each other off by a simple lack of respect and courtesy. Still good in Oswego, I brought the Crazy Bitch out tonight for a 3 hour trip with my dad and we had a pretty good pm trip, bright Coho's and bronze Kings off 9 mile east in 65 to 85 fow. We set lines around 3pm and had the first rod pop in about 30 minutes, 55 rigger (top of break), chrome mtn dew chip/TG fly stretched back about 60 ft. The picture was unbelievable when we first set up, more Kings than I ever marked on my Furuno, one after the other, you would think rods would be flying constantly, the picture cleared rather fast and we certainly didn't set the world on fire but there was plenty of action to be had. Next rod that flew was a braid diver (setting 3) out 150, it ended up being the largest fish of our trip (see image) big bronze boar, fish hit a similar rig with another TG fly. Missed a couple here and there, one off another 20 lb diver and another off the same rigger but set a bit deeper, fish lately coming off riggers have been tough to hold onto, once the rod shakes or releases leave the rod right in the holder and reel like hell till your rod is bent over double, many of the Kings lately seem to wanna shake their head as they move up the water column before they decide to run, this leaving for a good chance to elude us. Stay on them, constant pressure and don't give em even the smallest chance to shake their head and gain some slack, their very elusive. The braid diver went off 3 total times all with hard shots, landed 2 of them, all our Kings were 20 lbs. plus, big aggressive fish, the 2 Coho's we took were about 7 to 9 lbs. and both decided to scrap once behind the boat. Another King off our same high rigger was a burner, ran off about 250 ft of 30 mono before we turned her around, we thought it might of had a bad hook but just an aggressive fish. We ran 4 rods, 3 with chrome type chips and just one deep rigger set with the same old green/green rig that we dedicated in that spot, which was good for one of our Coho's. Speed has been crucial all week for us, heading westerly you need to troll as slow as you can, we keep both bags in and an 800 rpm idle just to keep our down speed below 2.4, heading east has been very good to us, much more forgiving in speed, we can get to 1.8 to 2.4 ds and it has made a huge difference in hook-ups, for those having trouble with hooking up Kings lately there is a great chance it is your speed !!!! NICE NIGHT TONIGHT !!!!! ![]() September 05, 2009
Oswego fishing remains good, plenty of great catches reported daily, in as tight as 70 to 90 fow some days and as deep as 120 to 160 others. Down around 70 early to bottom throughout the day, the "night bite" has been tremendous (6 to 7:30 pm) !! Almost everything working except Big Weenie, Siggs, and Howie, don't use those, you won't catch nuttin' !!!! (: ........ Chrome in the sun, white and green glow early, late and overcast. Things are good with the occasional day in the barrel for everybody (except Troy Creasy, he has been on fire !!!! ) Also a few images from the last few days, (Image with me) Largest off the Crazy Bitch this season, 28 lbs. and change, after all the 18 to 22 lb Kings you see you take one of these and think you just won the derby, He He He My daughter Mikayla one day and Del of Liquid Plumber aboard the "Crazy Bitch" ![]() ![]() ![]() Tuesday September 01, 2009

NOTE: Big Fin Gene predicted it, he phoned yesterday and said to get out there, there commmmmmmmmmmmmming Tom, The mother load of King's and Coho's has arrived to O Town, it does change daily as we all know however most charters with limits today, come and get some, things are good says' Andy Bliss off the Cold Steel, Kevin Davis off the Hat Trick, Tommy TK and Tommy Germain, all smiling after today, Kevin Davis said your grandmother could have taken a limit today. ***WOW*** ***WOW*** Lets hope they are here to stay for a few weeks !!!!!!!!!!!! 90 to 125 fow, working 70 to 90 ft down in the water column, all I heard was attractor flies today, Hammertime rig, glow B flies, hammer flies, chrome in the sun, L202, L204 and L205's, white blade/mtn dew chips and spinnies with TG flies, heard many options, Coho's are here !!!! averaging 8 to 10 lbs., Saweeeeeeeeet !!!! Tommy Germain took a King bouncing 32 to 34 on the digitals (hit a hammer fly, DUH !!) No derby ticket, another DUH !!!, lots of lost copper today, copper was hot for many. Wires were hot with the Captain Valium rig, (good luck finding any, we sold a total gross plus a few more dozen we had), ran with T168 and T174 Spoonpuller Net Pen flies. Ok enough, my hands are shaking, I wanna go.................... Good luck anglers, 34.11 the mark to beat for the LOC, a King over 29.05 to get on the board !!!!! Just maybe one like one of these. One sitting at Nature's Way Taxidermy or one like this Freakin' Monster sitting on Rolan Poulins' wall already. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ !!!!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ![]() ![]() Sunday August 30, 2009
We had some pretty solid fishing towards the end of this past week before the wind blew, it was bumpy out there this am and the fish moved up in the water column the last day or 2 making them a bit harder to target due to the lake turning over. Most charters and rec boats still managing to put Kings in the boat however each day. Temps actually moved back down a touch today though and Big Fin Gene aboard the Sea Devil had riggers go at 70 and 80 and wires at 175 to 190, 7 bites in all after leaving the dock late and pulling lines around 11am, 90 to 125 fow being worked pretty well, not many boats looking towards that deeper water due to how rough it is at present. Not a whole lot of boats out today actually, the Reel Fun vessel operated by Dave Burkhart had a good morning as well with Kings ranging from 16 to 23 lbs. Gene said as he watched Dave unloading them. Hot items the last few days included: Green E chips/#41 flies, Chrome E chips/L204, Mtn dew taped spinnies and Big Fin B flies, Sweet Pea and Pro/Am flies still flying off the shelves of all Eastern Basin tackle shops, one other item that really picked up in popularity as of the last 4 to 5 days are the "Net Pen" series flies, #168, #174 and L201 Live version, all selling and catching quite well we have heard. Gene said he was running 4 green/green rigs today and said they all fired in different spots, Gene loves his #41 flies, Dave's hot rig was more than likely his Howie Key Lime Pie Fly He He He He He Congrats to Bob Holdsworth from Coatesville PA, aboard the "Fish Magnet" for taking the newest leading LOC King weighing in at 34.11, King was taken on a Hammer Fly. We would also like to make a mention of a recent 40 lb. King taken by a couple of anglers early last week off the Niagara Bar, this King was also taken on a Hammer Fly. I recall the fall time frame in 2004 while sitting on my front porch with a pencil and scratch pad jotting down color schemes to be tied and added for the 2005 season, there were 3 patterns, one that never made it, the T100 Skeins Machine fly and the T102 Hammer Fly. The reason I thought about it stemmed from a few missions aboard the "Little Whip" with Tommy Germain in the fall of 2004, we had a #22 Powder Blue fly that we ran faithfully with yellow chart. opaque colored beads. I wanted to be sure everyone who ran this fly had that yellow fluorescent in it. Guess the Hammer Fly is a simple staple here to stay. NICE JOB to these anglers WTG, drop me an E Mail if either of you anglers are internet savy. Wednesay August 26, 2009
Rough water today reported by the Cold Steel boys, the wind really didn't accommodate the size of the waves but it was super bumpy. Most boats coming in early during their am trips, fish were being caught though. Cold Steel was working out the front door in the 180 to 270 fow range and had flies firing off 240 and 270 wires, riggers at 70 to 90 and a 450 copper. Seemed to be a better day today fishing wise, go figure. Andy said there was ample chatter among the higher percentage of boats fishing the 110 to 140 fow range concerning hook-ups. Andy's rigs that were firing were the Captain Valium rig (also now available at Fat Nancy's in the Pro Troll version), a green dot/#119 and a green chip/#41. Congrats to Vic Minotti in his 22' Starcraft "Hotliner" for taking a 33lb/ placing LOC King out of Oswego. Vic has been around the Oswego big water scene since I started fishing back in the mid 80's..................NICE JOB VIC !!! Not sure if Vic is an internet guy but if you are drop me an E mail bud !!!! Vic's response to my post: Tom, thanks for the congrats !! The King was a nice surprise in the afternoon yesterday. I had a trip in the morning that was done at noon so I went in and sat at the dock for a bit listening to the wind. I had bought my girlfriend a LOC ticket so around 3:30 we decided to go out. We were set up for about a half hour and the big one hit and then of course just when you really don't want it we doubled. Emma did a great job netting both fish and we scrambled to pick up and get it in. Thanks to other boats in the area to stay out of the way. Capt. Vic. Hotliner Charters Guess Vic made the right call to head back out on good ole Lady O, Nice job again my friend Tuesday August 25, 2009
We took the Crazy Bitch out today with the boss herself, slowwwww fishing, managed just 2 colored up boars, one on a white/green glow Lyman and one on a white spinnie and a new blue glow hammer fly. We could only take it for about 3 1/2 hours and were back at home before 11am, most boats had Kings but no great numbers, average take by 10am was 1 to 3 Kings. However there were also a few rainbows, lakers and BT's in the mix. We started off 5 stacks this am with a bit of a late start, we had ample marks on the bottom in the 90 to 100 fow range but it all cleared up rather fast. High Adventure had a hot hand this am working his white paddles and hammer flies and there were also a few boats around starting to take Kings on red attractors and crinkle green flies. Troy seemed to spend a few early hours a bit deeper than us around 120 fow. Boats were galore today mostly spread out from the shoot and east, we even heard of a few Kings this am taken on spoons, (didn't get the colors, sorry). Meat also took a few, we have had a few meat rigs working lately but we did not manage a hit today on our meat, we have been running the older style Metzeler twinkie rigs that we build, but with John King style whole bait heads. Low and slow being the key !!! You can still take plenty of Kings right now but timing and location have to come together, I often do not agree with much luck when taking Kings consistently but right now luck seems to be playing a higher percentage than normal, The Kings are moving around and sitting down on top of them will certainly aid in your success. We ran 4 wire divers today figuring the pressure was getting to the fish, it was good for 2 but that was about it. Keep at it anglers, if you can get out and fish do it, our season is almost behind us................ ): Monday August 24, 2009
Fishing remains tough at best, Kings are certainly around but trust me when I say they are not coming easy. Location, Location, Location........ While some anglers will struggle to take just a few bites others are managing nice catches. In the big picture however not what we want during what is considered the "peak" time right now. A few charters are setting up right "out the front door" and finding success on some mornings and finding themselves picking and running deeper towards the end of their trip after the initial morning bite has slowed. East of the Oswego port 15 to 20 miles has been more consistent the last few days. As far as depths are concerned many anglers are sticking it out in the 80 to 150 fow range a few miles east and west daily, the offshore scene has been even less consistent. Some of the normal go to baits are still very popular, mostly attractor/fly spreads but the mention of meat has been floating around as well. Early am white/white has been good for about an hour, then switching to green/green, white/green or white/hammer. The Pro/Am and Sweet Pea flies are still remaining favorites going on for a while now, don't over look chrome blades with many mirage type patterns while sunny. A bigger issue than color patterns (keeping in mind running sun patterns and overcast patterns) has been simply finding fish to work. I'm not one to sugar-coat what is going on in front of Oswego right now so getting the most info you can from friends and talking around sure will pay off, looking for info has been a big key to success as of late. For those who enjoy just getting away and spending some time on the water the chances of at least taking a nice trophy are very high. My 2 man A-TOM-MIK team placed 9th in the Oswego leg of the Scotty, my cousin and myself generated 12 bites over 2 days and put 7 Kings in the boat, we were very happy about this after fishing everyday the entire week trying to figure out some sort of program. Congrats to Kevin Davis and Eric Marcinkowski for being the only team to take their 10 King limit over 2 days. Team Striker had it going on 20 miles east of Oswego and had some hot patterns with Pro/Am, Sweet Pea and Glow Hammer flies doing the damage, Congrats to the rest for the Kings and Coho's taken, it was not easy. Our program consisted of pounding out the inshore waters (80 to 120 fow) on day one and heading offshore (450 to 550) on day 2. Best items for us was a simple green Pro Troll and #41 green glow flies, we ran at least 3 of them pretty much the entire day on Sunday, and switching to at least 1 chrome rig when the sun was out. Monday August 17, 2009
Fishing was pretty good today out of Oswego for quite a few anglers, there seem to be some quality fish around and also some good numbers in certain areas. The toughest part of the game lately is where to head. Some doing good deep, some shallow, tough to give a solid report as one single day making a huge difference. Best bet lately is to stick with the proven colors and don't be afraid to fish 120 fow or 600. Temps also changing daily, sort of weird even on days with no wind you will find the top of the temp break 10 or even 20 feet higher or lower than the day before. Fact is Kings are around, you can predict them to be stubborn at will. A few key go to items: White Pro Troll/Hammer colored flies, Chrome Pro Trolls/various mirage patterns, Green/Green and also our new spotted spinnies, we are out of half of them 33% of the time, but the Capt. Valium rig still holding its own, any of the rest having their day to shine. Oh yeah, a King or two around that 28 to 32lb. mark being taken pretty much every day. Sunday August 16, 2009
Fishing in Oswego is picking up, good catches reported yesterday and this am, various areas, no one area the promise land, but more numbers of Kings started moving around since Friday. Tuesday August 11, 2009
Hmmm..... If I could only use one word, it would be a pretty easy decision what word I would use.............T-O-U-G-H........... that would sum it up pretty darn good. I don't like to use the word SUCK in my reports so I won't !!!! Unless your Kevin Davis the last week has been very trying for just about everyone. Some charters managing to make a decent trip now and again and some rec's finding glory at one time of the day over another, but in Oswego's big picture, mid August (nearing) leave's much to be desired. If it makes anybody feel better even Kevin struggled today. Ok, so you want to know what has been working consistently lately ?..... N-O-T-H-I-N-G ~!!!!!! I retyped that first paragraph about 29 times trying to sugarcoat it all, WTF I'm honest around 98% of the time so why change now I figure. Even our A-TOM-MIK flies aren't increasing the daily "Kill" numbers by all that much.................maybe I should get a call into Matt, Tim or Gary and see if they can help Oswego out......... Ok, enough doom and gloom, the fishing isn't where we/I would like it to be but there have been some awesome Kings and BT's taken, just not big numbers. A decent catch has honestly been reported daily but hit and miss and very sporadic the norm. There seem to be adult Kings around the bottom area of 120 to 150 fow each day, the BT guys even taking just a few of them as incidentals, but the majority of Kings are being taken in that 300 to 500 fow range and are coming down 100+, 120 to 140 to tighten up that range a little. I do feel bias most times as I do believe in the attractor/fly gig (and obviously I want to keep food on the kids plates) but much of Kevin's success (it seems) has just been wandering around aimlessly, covering lots of water and keeping the flies swimming across large areas. Hat Trick keeps the faith under these circumstances and it has paid off with a 5 to 8 King per trip average. No great particular color attractor/fly out performing another but I can say that the sales of our Sweet Pea's (#134 and #135) have been strong but especially the Pro Am's (#126, 126X and L210) have outsold everything else for the last few weeks. Seems each year a certain color will eventually take over sales of all others (2003-04 Crinkle Green's and White Halo were tops) (2005 TG's) (2006-07 Hammer's) (2008 Crazy Bitch) (2009 Pro Am flies) so as the saga continues 2009 the Pro Am flies are King to date. Other popular colors mentioned lately, L220 Tall Tails, T164 42 second and the #41, also our live series have really kicked up sales. So, if your looking to fish Oswego, Fair Haven or Mexico much of the same is going on, you can expect tough fishing right now, we all know how fast that can change and we really expect and hope for that change soon. On any given day we do hear of one boat doing well, find the fish and your in, just no consistency by more than a different boat each day. Sorry all................Let's hope it changes soon Friday August 07, 2009
Charters started redeeming themselves yesterday and into today after the blow.............. Today ----------> Fishing is good !!! Weather is bad !!! If it's not bad weather it's bad fishing, if it's not bad fishing it's bad.... well you get the hint. Cold Steel had a 30# hog today this am (See image) over 375 fow, D O W N ~~ D E E P, 120 TO 140 ft of cable, 300 to 350 wire divers and 500 and 600 coppers, clientele were not enjoying it however as Andy said it was real sloppy out there, if the Cold Steel vessel is getting bounced around you can figure it's usually pretty sloppy. Most boats with action, Tommy Germain out deeper 500+, than most guys as usual and Ace Charters with is #110 Ace flies going, fishing deeper than most (had a 180 rigger go). Little bit of action going around, Andy's hot fly was the L220 (also took the big guy) and he ran it behind a transformer attractor (not sure what this is he said he picked it up at Fat Nancy's last night) Top of temp was ranging from 100 to 110 depending on how much water you were over. One little hint to all you out there is the local captains have had some repeated success lately running at least one rig "up in the soup" this meaning keeping your highest rig above the top of the break, around 60 to 63 degrees. It's been good for a fish or 2 daily and usually a big one. Fish aren't always necessarily coming from that area but they are known for feeding "up" in the warmer water at times. ![]() Wednesday August 05, 2009
Blow off day, nobody we taked to went out, many cancled trips. Charters hopeful that the strong westerly wind we got brought the Kings back Monday August 03, 2009
On a scale of 1 to 10 the fishing this weekend (out of Oswego) was about a 5 to 6, best catch yesterday we heard of consisted of 6 Kings, average take was 1 to 4. Better times surely to come as the migration and staging will continue to our eastern basin, one thing for sure even though the slaughter isn't presently taking place however is on any given day you can reap success hauling in our Lake Ontario Kings out of the port of Oswego. Saturday showed much in the same for success, a few boats taking 6 and 8 Kings but the rest of the pack averaging a low count. 1 charter had 7 nice Kings on Sat.'s am trip and turned around and got a donut on their pm charter, so day to day changes not the only case, am/pm even !! One thing for sure is the fact that there are big old angry hogs around and your chances of taking a 30+ lb. King are rather high at any given time. Yesterday aboard the Crazy Bitch we had several of the Team Cold Steel members out and fished from 5:30 am to 1 pm, we had 4 bites, 3 King's and Steelhead landed. Kings came on green/green, and 2 on Captain Valium and the steelhead came on a chrome chip/live series L205. We worked from 130 to 400 fow, fish came from an 80' rigger, 2 from 160 and a 260 wire diver and a 500 copper. Putting your time in simply the key as of lately. Hat Trick had the 6 Kings yesterday and one tipped the scales at around 30 lbs., came on a Lyman plug ran off a 500 copper, Kevin's other fish came on green/green, chrome/L202, and the live series L200 hammer fly ran behind a white chip. Kevin has had several Kings come off a few Lymans he has been running each day, don't put them J plugs away just yet anglers as the Kings still like to eat them at times. As of 8:30am today things were much in the same, out of several boats we talked to the take was low talking Kings, however the charters in BT waters were doing ok, 60 to 80 fow working near the bottom with standard size Stinger spoons and SS DW's. I guess we may be in for some westerly wind this week so things have a great chance to change. Yesterday and this am the top of the break was around 65 to 75 down depending on how much water you were over. ![]() Wednesday July 29, 2009
Fishing has turned around for the time being, last evening things started to change and the Kings that were in O Town started biting. At one point Cold Steel even did a double with a 25 lb. and 29 lb. at the same time (attractor/flies).......... NICE !! Today first thing Hat Trick said everyone was catching, temps were still a bit high with the top of the break around 50 to 60 ft depending on your depth. 200 to 400 fow was where it was happening, Ace Charters had a 600 copper section going with his favorite Ace Fly (#110) and Kevin aboard the Hat Trick had a DW frog spoon (standard size) a green Lyman and also several flasher flies all having action, mtn dew/TG was good. Kevin's target area was higher in the water column than Ace, Ace also had deep riggers firing as well set over 100 down. The difference a day can make, all I can figure is with the temps moving around and keeping the Kings a bit un-settled they will still have to eat sooner or later. Kevin said first am for almost 2 hours it was very hot fishing with several doubles and a triple, a mix of mostly adults and a few teenagers. Then there was an hour lull and after that they bit again. Guess it's just that time of year if your going to come visit O Town you might just as well come, if it's tough one day the next day can prove different. Kevin also noted the adults taken were huge/healthy matures pulling off a ton of line and fighting like mad. (: This will be my last report until Monday when I get back from the Tightline Shootout in Ontario, Canada Tuesday July 28, 2009
Fishing in Oswego is in-consistent, the east and southerly winds moved our temps around and we have a lot of un-stable water. Most local charters are back to BT fishing in the 40 to 60 fow range working the lower depths in that area. The few that are still chasing Kings are working 400 to 500 feet of water, this am Hat Trick had 50 degrees down 60 ft over 400 fow and had a couple teenagers in the box. They also lost 2 bigger Salmon and landed 1 Atlantic, this as of 9:30 am. So there is hope for now but working for your Kings is back to where it's at, hopefully we can get a westerly blow and set up our thermoclines once again in that 70+ range. Items working for the BT's in the shorter water are spoons like chicken wing, alewife and die-hard in standard size stingers or 28 size spoons. Items working for the King guys are a mix of spoons, flies and lyman's, Kevin had the same old green/green and also a mtn dew/chrome chip flasher/fly combination each take a bite. Occasional bait and Kings on the screen prove that some of our Oswego Kings are still lurking but spread around making them tough to target. 1 Trout One 6 60 125.3 185.3 2 Orca 6 60 113.98 173.98 27.42 3 Five More Minutes 6 60 112.73 172.73 26.08 4 Yukon Joe 6 60 110.15 170.15 21 5 Dreams Come True 6 60 110 170 6 Yellow Dog 6 60 109.95 169.95 7 Hat Trick 6 60 107.15 167.15 8 Fish Nutz 6 60 107.0 167 9 Fish Hunter 6 60 106.45 166.45 10 Jons Little Salmon 6 60 106.1 166.1 20.12 11 Hoops McCann 6 60 106.05 166.05 24.14 12Fish Psychic III 6 60 105.8 165.8 13 Lucky Enuff 6 60 105.2 165.2 14 Finhooker 6 60 99.65 159.65 15 Flash Five 6 60 93.3 153.3 16 Dirty Mud Sharks 6 60 93.25 153.25 20.56 17 P&B Two Moran's 6 60 92.65 152.65 18 Sea Devil 6 60 89.25 149.25 19 Screamer A-Tom-mik 6 60 83.75 143.75 20 DW/Fish Heads 6 60 83.2 143.2 21 Bandit 6 60 83.05 143.05 22 Irish Knots / Traxstech 5 50 91.9 141.9 25.88 (Kids Big Fish) 23 Salmon River Guide 6 60 78.87 138.87 24 Chrome Chaser 6 60 76.94 136.94 25 Tugs/Nadeau 4 40 95.2 135.2 33.35 (Adult Big Fish) 26 Midway 5 50 83.2 133.2 27 Thunder Struck 6 60 69.78 129.78 28 Protius 5 50 77.2 127.2 29 Team Buffa 5 50 76.1 126.1 30 Out for Trout 5 50 74.47 124.47 31 Prime Time 4 40 78.97 118.97 32 Good Times III 5 50 68.63 118.63 33 High Adventure 6 60 54.75 114.75 34 Team Turtle 4 40 69.15 109.15 35 Pond Hop'r 5 50 57.2 107.2 36 Praying Mantis 4 40 65.27 105.27 37 Daniel Fishing 4 40 61.37 101.37 38 Get Annette 4 40 59.25 99.25 39 Liquid Plumber 5 50 46.15 96.15 40 Nomad 3 30 64.73 94.73 41 Maybe 4 40 48.5 88.5 42 Fish Hound 3 30 57.85 87.85 43 Junebug 4 40 47.25 87.25 44 Horsin' Around 3 30 54.3 84.3 45 Fish Hawk 5 50 33.7 83.7 46 Draggin Fly 4 40 40.95 80.95 47 Dolly May 3 30 48.55 78.55 48 Jumpin Jack 3 30 46.3 76.3 25.18 49 Popeye / A-Tom-mik 3 30 39.3 69.3 50 Team Sparks 3 30 35.3 65.3 51 Home Office 3 30 28.94 58.94 52 Nite Owl 2 20 31.55 51.55 53 Yellow Fever 2 20 30.8 50.8 54 Beatle 2 20 28.86 48.86 55 Almost Heaven 2 20 26.82 46.82 56 Sunset Slammers 2 20 24.5 44.5 57 Team Stone Fly 3 30 12.02 42.02 58 Empty Hook 1 10 21.9 31.9 21.9 59 Seaweed 2 20 10.96 30.96 60 Mike's Marina / Free Bird 1 10 19.08 29.08 19.08 61 Seaducktion/Dreamchasers 2 20 8.2 28.2 62 Point of View II 1 10 16.96 26.96 63 Miss 'em 1 10 16.38 26.38 16.38 64 Trophy Nuts 1 10 10.38 20.38 33 Teams did not weigh in - 97 Teams Total Friday July 24, 2009
After another hot fishing day yesterday off the Crazy Bitch and many Kings landed as well by the Oswego Fleet in that 100 to 150 down "Kill Zone" over 200 to 350 fow, but things are moving around as of now, pretty much like that daja voo feeling. South and easterly winds have iced us out, haven't heard a whole lot of positive reports this am but Cold Steel ran deep looking and TK ran inside to chase BT's. 50 ft down is 50 degrees off Oswego over 200 fow. Not sure I will get a chance to update before the end of the day but last King I heard of this am was taken on a Captain Valium rig off a 10 color core............ OUCH !! Tuesday July 21, 2009
Flat, warm, sunny, calm conditions seem to have zero impact on the Kings wanting to feed. Today I took Steph, her son Thomas, Hoss and Half Pint aboard the Crazy Bitch and had at em'. Set up a bit to the west in 175 fow and wandered around aimlessly for a bit until we took our first bite in 275 fow. Kings were willing to play today and made for an action packed adventure. Wire divers out 300 to 335, a single copper at 500 and riggers from 140 to 160 all getting picked on. Green chip/green fly, the Capt. Valium rig and a new series "Tall Tails" fly (L220) behind a white chip all doing damage. All healthy size Kings today that were just a rip-roaring off line and wires, pretty much hang on for your life and keep your fingers out of the way from peeling line's. My new fish-hawk down speed seemed a bit off today so I don't have a confirmed down-speed that was working but it didn't seem to matter all that much, a couple times we were dead slow fighting Kings and our rods were still firing. Seemed to me most boats in sight had a fish or 2 as well. A few images from today, Steph ended the day with 2 blisters and a sore belly, poor girl, I felt sooooooooo bad !!! A couple doubles, and pretty steady action, a few images from today................. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Fishing is still very good, some local charters taking limits of Kings daily, but most taking 4 to 8 Kings per trip. There are large kings around pushing upper 20's with a very nice average size of adults. Temps are still deep and a few new items seem to be taking Kings on a normal basis, the new Live Series A-TOM-MIK flies in white halo live, pro/am live and hammer live having good success. Our new dotted Spin Doctors in green dot/green blade and green dot chrome blade (Capt. Valium rig) steady producers, when these things hit the market in the days ahead I think some anglers will wonder how we did without them. #41 fly is ran mostly with the green dot/green blade rig and either a pro/am fly or a stock sweet pea fly (Green dot/Chrome & #134 fly Capt. Valium rig named after Capt. Tom Burke) will soon be a rig you will want in your arsenal, this rig aided heavily as well as a few other key rigs and no longer a secret in our success for our Cold Steel/A-TOM-MIK Pro/Am Cup win on the Pro side!!!! (Other new concepts/rigs to be revealed in the days ahead) Waters east and west of the shute in 150 to 300 all good depending on the day. The next 6 weeks is what we have all waited for, C'mon up and tangle with some of our tackle busting Kings Oswego County has to offer !!!!!!!!! N I C E !!!! First King to ever fall victim to the chrome/green dot/#134 rig now known as the "Capt Valium Rig", Young Tommy was out with dad on the "Crazy Bitch" for a few testing missions prior to the Oswego Pro/Am. After landing his 3rd King he said "Dad I am sorry but I've had enough" lol, of course I made him stay just a bit longer for a few more Kings !!!! lol, Thanks T for your help !!!! ![]() Thursday July 15, 2009
Fishing is very good off Oswego, attractor flies are being ran on 95% of the spreads. 175 to 300 fow has the best concentration of Kings, fish deep, 100 to 150 ft down, temps are deep, in some areas you will need to probe to 140 or so to get 42 degrees. Lots of color combinations working, green/green, white/hammer, mtn dew/B fly, chrome/mirage, green dot/hammer, even some blue attractors on some days. Best down speeds have been fluctuating daily, 2.0 to 2.5. Running dipsy's off your riggers in the out-down position are taking fish daily. Coppers and wire divers are having their days but riggers have been gaining a slight advantage due to being able to run them deep. We are presently sold out of 15# and 20# Sharks but they have been a great key to success lately. We should have more in later next week. Sunday July 5, 2009
Winds settled a bit after a very strong 2 day blow with no boats out, boats started wandering out again today. The 15th annual Oswego County Pro/Am Team Tournament is right around the corner so detailed info will be limited, I will say however with the strong westerly blow temps are down D-E-E-P. Deep Kings is Oswego's finest forte so we will surely have some teams excel who choose to chase them. BT fishing has slowed and incidental Lakers and Bows' will surely account for some of the take in the days ahead. Monday looks goods but the winds might be back come Tuesday. A mix of spoons and flies have both taken their fair share of fish so far out of Oswego, but when deep Kings are lurking attractor/fly spreads will excel !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On the Pro Side Teams' "Screamer", "Cold Steel", "Sea Devil/Big Fin" and Team TK all have a whole lot of pride on the line and the friendly but serious "Dock Chat" has began, look for these teams as well as last years top seat "Team Redline" and current point leader "Top Gun" (currently leading in points coming out of the East), Team Thrillseeker and Vision Quest (as well as other teams) to be fighting for that top spot, oh how the fun is going to begin !! Best of luck to all this week and may the best Pro and Am teams rise to the top and enjoy victory ... Wednesday July 1, 2009
A bit of a rougher bite today out of Oswego, weather wise was gorgeous but working for your fish was a must. Temps were moving around (up) as they always do with a southerly wind, we marked plenty of Kings over the course of our few hours out there but getting them to go was not easy. Lots of debris to deal with, the beginning of flea season and high skittish Kings was the story for today. We had 55 degrees down 60 ft over 150 fow, we took one nice King right there on the standard green/green. For the amount of bait and hooks out there once these temps move down in the water column I think things could be good in the days/weeks ahead. Kevin Davis was aboard the Crazy Bitch today with me and it was a good time hanging out with a buddy, especially a guru !!! Thanks for the time today Kevo-O, and nice LOC fish btw. Kevin landed the first King to make the LOC board aboard the Crazy Bitch, a cool 21 lbs. I was dying to give him some advice while he was fighting his fish but I left him alone and he did just fine, (:~~ the grin never left his face during the fight and when I plopped the fish on the deck of the Crazy Bitch Kev-O say's there ya go, that ones at least 20 lbs. all day long !!! ![]() ![]() Tuesday June 30, 2009
Fishing has picked up in O Town, heard many reports from the weekend that consisted of at least a King or 2 in the mix, some big ones as well !! I set out on the Crazy Bitch this am with Steph herself, we were joined by Cold Steel, Hat Trick, TK Charters and Little Whip as well as a couple of other anglers. Amongst the charters were a mix of Kings, Rainbows a few BT's, also a new chat among the VHF and cell phones that spelled one very lucky word for Oswego... K I N G S........... Much of our success this am was pretty much the same items being ran by the charters mentioned. Here goes the important stuff, our first rod fired on a 175 wire diver with a green dot/hammer fly in tow, quickly ran off 50 feet of 20# wire and away, it went away as fast as it started, but it felt good to be turned around in your captains chair by the scream of a Tekota 600 drag. NICE !!! Went about an hour after that and an 84 rigger fired with another screaming 600 drag, green Pro Troll/#41 and the first 17# King hit the deck, Steph said wow that was hard, what a fight (lol), another 1/2 hour and our same 175 wire diver rig takes another shot and we managed to keep this King buttoned up as well (14 lbs.) Ok, we can do this we were thinking and off to an ok bite began. Another little laps and a swing and a miss on a 70 rigger with a green dot spinnie/TG Fly, that one went away. By about 10 oclock another 200' wire diver starts pounding, this was our biggest King, we even ran it in to weigh it in but it was about 14 oz. shy of making the LOC board. We also did several rainbows on 2 of the same rigs and a nice 8 lb Rainbow on a 400 copper. Around 10 bites total was the tally and Steph had enough, Kings were coming out of upper 50 degree water, small pods of bait around from 100 to 290 fow, we marked several fish we caught, not a ton of targets nor a ton of bait but rods were moving and fishing from Oswego is good,,,,, We'll take it !! Best DS on my new FH was a solid 3.0 !!! Leads off the riggers ranged from 15 to 25'. Fleas are starting, had 1/2 gum-ball sized drops when wires sat for about an hour........... Boo Hoooo, we noticed these in Canada as well the last 5 days but were hoping maybe we didnt have them............ Wrong I was, they are here dog gonnit !!!!!!! Hoss wasn't too impressed with our boat ride today !!! If you ever need to Macgyver the paddle wheel of your new fish hawk probe due to the lock washer falling off gum will do the job, this was after several hours of trolling. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Monday June 22, 2009
Fishing remains slow out of Oswego, the King bite has turned non-existent to date except for skippie Kings, we are hopeful this could change very soon. The BT fishing remains spotty with fish being taken every day but still no good numbers, areas being worked daily range from off 5 stacks to east 9 mile, off the green can west of the shute and also further west to 8 and 9 mile creek area. Occasional fish from the harbor as well, the BT's have added some weight with average size ranging from 3 to 5 lbs., this larger than the 2 to 3 lb 2 year olds from this spring. Also some lunker BT's as well mixed in. There seems to be ample bait around but the lack of any temp. break is the problem right now, surface is as warm as upper 50's but from 20 ft under the surface to bottom only varies a few degrees (from in tight to out deep). Maybe the expected warmer weather will start us off later this week. There still seem to be just a few bonus Rainbows, Atlantics and a few "Power Forkies" around during the hunt for BT's and Kings !!! Even some massive Smallies (3 to 4 lbs. along the shoreline) and some lunker sheepers (8 to 14 lbs.) mixed in with the few BT's being taken out of the harbor. As tough as it gets (right now in the dead of June) most anglers are finding a way to get the rods moving daily. Congrats to Steelhead slash Brown Trout fisherman young "Small Fin" Gene Delicati for having his 16.6# BT holding that 1st place spot after day 3 of the 2009 Summer LOC (as of 5:30pm today) (: Big Gene isn't taking to this too well I hear !!!! "Dam kid" he say's............. Saturday June 20, 2009
Fishing remains tough in O Town, there are some beauties being taken but not a whole lot of them, heard Hat Trick took a 26# King yesterday (Image on its way) and also just got back from taking a few images of the current leading BT. Fish came over 80 fow on a copper rig with a #41 fly. Most boats out today weren't reporting much, there is bait around and there are BT's inside 80 fow but not many Kings at present. We found the best concentrations of bait in 40 to 50 fow and also scattered pods down 30 to 50 over 90 to 210 fow, the BT's can be worked in the tighter waters but there are no hooks at all around the deeper bait. ![]() Big Gene said he is losing faith in his son young Gene-e", "Last week I had to deal with him catching Steelhead and this week he has turned into a Brown Trout fisherman, all my hard work teaching him how to catch Kings down the drain" LMAO --Quote from Gene Senior-- Wednesday June 17, 2009
Windy day today out of O Town, strong southerly blow just a whipping along. My daughter got out of school early today after testing and wanted to go for a ride on the big pond (gotta love it when your 13 year old daughter wants to go fishing), especially trolling where there are no mirrors and curling irons.......... so I just couldn't refuse, only had limited time so I hooked up with my buddy Tommy Germain since my boat is in the shop, and off we went to the current BT land. We set up in 40 fow right off the shute, knew things haven't been fast and furious so I warned Mikayla up front, but as things change daily as we know we weren't out 25 minutes and our first 32 rigger fires while we were headed East. 2.2 DS at the FH probe, 75 ft lead off the ball with a 28 size ice style frog spoon (no idea what brand) Mikayla fought the BT with a smile, 5 lb fish, took an image and dropped it back in the drink and set lines again. Next fish took a 100ft copper section off a big board, Mikayla gets all the copper back on the reel, now just a 60 ft. leader left and the fun starts with this fish jumping and messing around all over the place accept in the water where he belonged, Mikayla said look Dad, make him quit jumping, in the net he gets scooped shortly thereafter, 4 lb. Atlantic, took a quick image back in the drink as well, (standard size stinger alewife) A good 30 minutes went by and Tommy yells FISH FISH, Mikayla gets to the rod, reels down on it and has another fight on her hands (once the BT gets to the back of the boat that is), another BT around 3 to 4 lbs. hits the net. (Same 32 rigger, frog spoon) Mikayla gets her hands slimy and bloody like a trooper and tosses it back, she did mention one small complaint and that was the blood that had squirted on her fresh toe-nail polish.................LMAO .. I fixed that however with a fresh pail of LO water right over her ankles and flip flops, (out of the pee-bucket no less, but she won't kow that until she reads this) He He He.... we pulled rods 15 minutes after that and headed back, not bad for less than 2 hours. Tommy hit depths of 40 to 65 fow, only bait we saw was sitting tight to bottom in 40 to 45 fow and that is also where we hit each of our fish. FYI I recall last season when the King bite got tough we were hitting BT's from 10am to 3pm quite frequently. Today I leadered our rigger rods down to 10 lb test and also used a 10# test leader off my standard 30# copper fluoro leader (30' of 30# and 30' of 10#) this way next time Tommy wants to run an attractor he can just cut the lighter leader off. Not sure if these specifics aided any in our catch today but when targeting any species in our clearer (often pressured) waters it certainly can never hurt !!!!! Monday June 15, 2009
Sorry for the delay in reports, been out of town 9 of the last 12 days fishing (such a hard life I have, lol), I have had bits and pieces of info coming in constantly though and fishing has been ok but far from great, typical mid June like the old days. One thing for sure though taking our Eastern end big lake fishing in consideration is that things can change in very short order. The right blow or the right conditions can mean a lot over just a day or 2. So as far as what has been going on up until this am is there are Brown Trout in 40 to 60 fow, they are being taken in that 20 ft down and right to the bottom range. Higher in the water column earlier as normal then deeper as it gets brighter, spoons in standard size Michigan Stingers and DW Super Slim in mainly greens, but black and silvers getting bit as well. Water temps are very homogenized ranging from 64 on top to 58 degrees down 40 ft, this inside 60 fow, all of which makes targeting our fish very tough, the fish are "everywhere" and no concentration to specifically target them in tighter areas of the water columns. King fishing has been slower yet, few reports that I have heard of, out deeper we have much in the same temps. as shallower, out over 140 fow we now have 45 degrees down 65 and the same at 110 down, leaves for no concentration at all (Bring on the thermo-clines as the bars will set up in the weeks ahead with warmer weathers to rid us of much homogenized waters) Only a few Kings taken that we are aware of recently, none of which have come on the same lures, presentations or in the same depths. Thanks for much of this info today from Tommy TK of TK Charters. Congrats to Oswego teams in the 2009 Orleans County Pro/Am this past weekend, again tough waters to target as we worked very hard to bring our fish to the boat each day, some days only taking 10 bites or less. Top Gun from Wrights Landing in Oswego took top honors in the Pro Division with the win, Nice Job Greg !! 2nd Place went to another set of Oswego guys in Team Screamer/A-TOM-MIK, as they shifted gears from their high experienced deep big King experience to target short water Rainbows and Coho's mostly up top, I would elaborate more but Dave hates when I give out his info so I will leave it at that, nice job guys, Dave's team consisted of the Big Fin Boys Gene and Gene and Joe "Naj". Our Oswego based Team Cold Steel/A-TOM-MIK/Fat Nancy's took the 3rd place spot in the Pro's with much of the same program as Screamer, we targeted Rainbows and Coho's as our King program was not happening with the dispersed Kings around. Tom Burke and Andy are shining this year showing our Cold Steel team how they can adjust to different programs and find the top placements tourney after tourney !! To sum it up it was a fun-filled, party like a madman come nighttime, and fish like hell when its light sort of gig!! Congrats to top finishers in am as well 1st) Fish Nuts, 2nd) 5-More Minutes/Siggs and 3rd) Team Liquid Plumber, never count out this Liquid Plumber team because they will be "right there" when the dust settles, thanks Del for that small tip to run a shute 10 color, it took our largest fish and also accounted for several of our tourney limit fish on day 2 !! (: Wednesday June 3, 2009
Not a lot of fishing info coming in, a few anglers from our area are getting ready to head west for the 2009 Niagara Pro/Am. The BT fishing has been ok with the few charters that are out getting them, no reports on Kings at all. I took my vessel to Mexico Point tonight and saw 1 boat fishing in tight and also saw one research vessel out off 9 mile. I am sure if more anglers were targeting Kings they would be getting a few. No further reports until Tuesday, June 9th as I will be participating in the Niagara Pro/Am, our Cold Steel/A-TOM-MIK Fly team will be up against a lot of stiff competitors as we defend our 2008 title (: Wish us well, meanwhile Good Fishing to all !! Saturday May 30, 2009
King fishing the last few days in Oswego has been tough, most boats averaging 2 or less Kings a day. BT fishing remains consistent weather permitting. Congrats to Del Casterline and the Liquid Plumber Team for their 48 lb catch of BT's (6 fish) and the 1st place win in "John's Little Salmon Brown Trout Derby" (66 Teams entered). Big Fin Gene was back in town and did good on Kings today straight out front fishing 120 down over 150 fow, mostly flies taking his Kings, biggest today for Gene was 17 lbs. he said. Final Results 2009 1st Annual "John's Little Salmon Brown Trout Derby" GREAT JOB JOHN AND CREW 1) Liquid Plumber 6 Fish 48.6 2) Prime Time 6 Fish 34.60 3) Cold Steel 6 Fish 32.48 4) A-TOM-MIK 6 Fish 30.88 5) Home Office 6 Fish 26.44 6) High Adventure 6 Fish 20.44 7) Team Dreams 6 Fish 20.22 The rest of the results are on hold, we heard there was a 3rd board we did not see when crunching the numbers Big Fish 1) Liquid Plumber 12.04 2) Rick Carson 9.38 3) A-TOM-MIK 8.4 Great job Del but you lost your hat today my friend and I gained a new Lucky Charm ![]() Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate and there were many teams that did not catch fish, or teams that may have taken just a single Brown Trout. Even more who were forced to quit early due to conditions. Congrats to those listed through 21st place for weighing in your catch. GREAT JOB TEAMS !!! PrimeTime Pete who is known for being one of the best BT guys around had his work cut out for him chasing down the Plumber crew, great catch though Pete !! Cold Steel is simply a force to be wrecken with, these guys are tough whether the conditions are adverse or not. Thanks to Captain Red from Redline for leading our A-TOM-MIK team to where the bigger BT's were, we went 6 for 6 in the first 6 hours only dropping one BT late in the day for what would have been a perfect record. My 13 year old daughter Mikayla was a trooper as she never complained for 9 solid hours of fishing horrible waters. My cousin Eric Burger was a great asset as well, thanks Eric for being a part of our team !!! Congrats to the rest of the top 10 for putting on a great showing !!!! A few days off the water till Tuesday for me )>: Time to get some work done.... ![]() Wednesday May 27, 2009
Fishing today was good for Brown Trout, TK Charters had them going in tight to the east of the shute, was 100% overcast and spoons in green/black/glow's were working as well as sticks off boards. The Crazy Bitch was out with my buddy Captain Red this am for a few hours, it was a slow day for us with the few hours we put in, we did 1 LT and a 1 King about 20 lbs., there was one other boat out we heard on the radio say he didnt move a rod. TK slid out for their last hour and took a few steelhead in the upper water column on high divers and dark colored spoons. Not a lot going on today once you left the shoreline BT waters, a stiff southerly wind was moving water around mixing things up. Our one nice King came down 77 on a green dot chip and #43 fly. ![]() Monday May 25, 2009
Fishing is pretty good today, TK headed west to target the short water looking for BT's, they found them and also took a few nice 3 yr olds in the mix of mostly 2 yr old BT's. They also had a nice size Steelhead mixed in with other smaller ones as well. Riggers from 8 to 15 down with Michigan Stinger Alewife and Tuxedo spoons over 15 to 30 fow. They were also running sticks off the boards in Smithwicks silver/black and baits also with gold in them. We heard a rumor there were a few larger BT's being taken this weekend even further west as far as 8 and 9 mile creeks to Nunzies and west, working very shallow water early then moving off to 15 to 40 fow after the first few hours. Not sure if this was true or not but a little birdie was heard talking !!!!! The King fishing was good today off the Hat Trick, they were working waters from straight out the shute to as far as 5 stacks east, depths ranged from 90 fow early and as deep as 190. The 90 to 115 down range was where the Kings were coming from, 50/50 attractor flies and spoon bites today. Spoons that took bites were mostly DW standard size, Kevin likes them as he feels he can run them faster with success (2.7 to 3.0 DS on the FH) Colors were chartreuse/silver and blue/purple, Kevins white paddle and #132 took fish and also a green/glow attractor with a #23 and #41 fly. He had a couple Kings around 20 and several teenagers and also some smaller, also the daily steelhead still in the mix. Was a good morning but the NE winds were picking up. Sunday May 24, 2009
BT fishing still very good, Salmon fishing Saturday was great for some anglers, today is starting off slow as of 7 am. Big Fin Gene fished with Jeff off the "More Money Baja" yesterday and boated plenty of Kings working a deep water fly program, Green/Green and White/Blue were his hot fly rigs, deep riggers to 125 down and coppers and wire divers out 500 and 300 all good. Lets hope today picks up !!! Short update, fishing remained slow till early afternoon then picked up for Gene and Jeff along with Captain Dan, they had 5 or 6 Kings on landing 4 of them in the last couple hours of their trip, pretty much the same program targeting deep Kings from 90 to 125 over 125 to 225 fow. All fly bites for these guys except just one spoon bite while fishing deep. Thursday May 21, 2009
Fishing today was outstanding for BT's early, the bite tapered off fast so some of the boats ventured out after Salmon. Same old trick for the BT's in the tight water was working, as the morning progressed most anglers had Kings in the box as well. I was aboard Hat Trick with Kevin Davis, we targeted Kings for the entire 6 hour charter. We pointed east and set up in 70 fow, we actually went a good 45 minutes before we moved a rod. Action wasn't fast and furious but plenty of fish around, we did a Lake Trout, 3 Atlantics, 4 or 5 Steelhead and several Kings up to 16 lbs. I hate to still admit it but spoons took the majority of fish for us, our biggest however hit a 105 rigger with a green attractor/#41 fly. Other presentations that fired were our 300 copper and 250 wire diver. Our speed all day was 2.6 to 3.1 GPS surface, conditions were less than 1 ft waves with Southeasterly winds and high sun. Spoons that fired were all standard DW or Michigan Stinger Stingray size in Tuxedo, Diehard, yellow Diehard and another spoon with blue/silver in it. We weren't marking a lot of fish, most were tight to bottom and had lock-jaw, the upper fish in the 50 to 85 range were scooting and willing to bite. We had very little bait but heard from others there is ample amounts of bait in shorter water. All in all a good day to be on the water, very comfortable and action to be had, just not hot and heavy, switching items around seemed to be key, several times changing stuff up triggered bites and FISH-On could be heard !!! Kevin took a few images I will get up later, right now I have some irate customers who are in need of some late filled orders, what some consider goofing off I consider field testing, so I guess I need to get to work now !!!!! (: (: BTW (Hello Gene and Dave, I know you guys are watching !!!!! ) He He HE FISH ON ............. Wednesday May 20, 2009
Fishing remains consistent, Brown Trout are plentiful and easily targeted early am, as the sun rises they aren't as easy but still around and being taken. East and West both producing, Smithwicks on the surface and shallow riggers with Stingers and DW's in standard and super slim. Frog patterns, chicken wing and diehard. Cold Steel and Salmon Tracker had a good day to the east as far as 5 stacks working inside 15 fow. Best speed 2.0. Heard a rumor Kevin Mazor (CEO Sgt) is around checking for short Atlantics, plenty of Atlantics in teh daily mix of BT's please be careful, they need to be 25" Salmon Fishing also remains viable, Hat Trick had a hot rod today set at 67 with a blue holo spoon on a rigger over 90 to 130 fowl. Second best combo was our #133 fly ran behind a white attractor. Kings for Kevin were coming from 67 to 105 ft down, also 225 off wires took a few Kings. I was aboard the TK today with Tommy and Coach, we worked waters straight out front and had action from 120 to 190 fowl, Kings came down from 102 ft riggers to divers out 275 (tapping the bottom in 120 fow at times, 20# wire setting 2) best speeds for us were 2.25 on the Moor, we didn't mark as many fish as we had liked to but we had a few hours worth of Kings on that 100 ft down line and they were scooting around every time we saw them and we hooked up on several occasions after marking them. No bait for us straight out front, not sure if Kevin had bait or not, I have a feeling the bait was inside us and Kings go in a feed at will. A client aboard Hat Trick and Tommy from TK Charters, 18# and 19# Sharks ![]()

Wow, next time you go fishing on your buddies boat and your thinking of pitching in 20 bucks for gas think about this post and hand him 50. I have not been a boat owner since 1994 when I sold my 221 Islander, I'm getting back into the swing of things and readying my new to me Penn Yan. Patrick Thayer of Redline Charters took me up to Boat US to pick up the last few things I needed before my vessel hits the water in a few days. A few bumpers and some dock lines, flares and extinguishers, life jackets, deck chairs and a deck brush and some soap, after my discount card was entered and my discount was applied, I owed just shy of a cool grand................ OUCH, Red warned me it does get better, surely can't wait for that time .... Fishing was good today early for the Hat Trick who chased the Kings, Kevin said the rods were flying for a few hours till the bite slowed. Today they wanted flies he claimed (: Deepest king came down 75 off a rigger using a green E chip flasher and a #41 Green Glow fly. Highest King came down 45, they worked waters inside 100 a bit to as deep as 190. Its been a mix of flies and a higher percentage of spoons lately but today it was just the opposite, just goes to show you need to keep your arsenal mixed and experiment each day for now. Until the Kings are in that 50 ft and below of the water column Kevin say's spoons will have their time. A few of the anglers targeting BT's today were getting some, not hot and heavy but taking them none the less. Weather today was wet, creeks and rivers are sure to produce lots of dirty water, rains were rather heavy at times. Kevin said the action this am was hot, he compared it to the Wilson fishery we have enjoyed and even said for a short while it seemed better, couple doubles and a triple to start the am off today Friday May 15, 2009
Fishing remains very good, shallow water BT fishing nothing short of stellar, wind and conditions are dictating placement some days throwing local charters a curve but it isn't taking them long to figure them out over the course of a 6 hour charters. Eastern shorelines from Oswego to the buoys of nine mile point from in tight to 25 fow, west of the shute around the green can area all good most days. Cold Steel had an awesome day chasing the silvers in 60 to 120 fow, mostly using the upper water columns to no deeper than 60 down. Tom had a 55 rigger with a plain jane green e chip/#23 fly go 5 times all with Kings, another hot set-up was a Michigan Stinger gator spoon out 90 on a wire. Kings and Steelhead have been easily targeted in that 30 to 55 down zone and willing to bite throughout the day. Down speeds of 2.2 to 2.5 have been good, the early morning thing very good one day into a bit later of a bite the next. Average take of silver fish ranging in the 6 to 15 fish per charter. Outstanding to say the least and not a lot of traffic, Tom said on a slow day he will see 4 or 5 boats and on a busier day maybe 8 or 9, certainly different from our tourney activity of around 60 to 80 boats a day. Should be a good weekend, hope you can make it to Oswego !!! Wednesday May 13, 2009
Oswego action remains good, BT fishing was a tad bit slower today than normal but all boats were still moving rods. The Harbor area was popular this am with nicely stained water and surface temps of 58 degrees. Tommy TK and the Dixie Dandy as well as Cold Steel both having action. Hat Trick ventured off shore to target silvers and were pleasantly rewarded with Kings and Steelhead, this was half way through the trip and they had plenty of silver in the box for their clientele. Kevin Davis gave us the specifics: 65 to 110 fow, working 20 to 50 ft down, inlines w/150' coppers and 4 to 5 color cores, also flat lines off a big board with keel weights in 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4. Wire divers out 60 to 80 setting 3 and riggers from 30 to 50 with free sliders. All accounting for Kings to 19 lbs. and Steelhead to 8 lbs. Spoons mentioned were Stinger Tuxedo and DW standard size Diehard, Salmon Slappers and Purple Thunders. ~~~GAME ON~~~ EAST ENDERS The time we have all hoped and waited for is upon us. It's even almost time for the Crazy Bitch to get her groove on !!! Oh Boy ![]()

Brown Trout fishing remains very good, nothing but positive reports from everybody we talk to. I just chatted with Captain Gerry Bresadola off the Dixie Dandy. Gerry said there were 2 to 3 ft waves out of Oswego coming from the west and we had very cold water after the windy weekend. There was very dominant dark water from the pounding winds near the shoreline but once you got away from that and into the greener water that was where you needed to be to move rods. Smithwick's in black/silver were good off boards as well as Michigan Stingers ran off very shallow riggers (3 to 5) and stretched back. Gerry, Tommy TK and Dave Wilson who have been working together on charters were very satisfied with targeting BT's as of late. The King fishing has been on a positive note as well, no consistency to date but plenty of Kings have been taken. Gerry mentioned we have bait one day but it's gone the next making it tough to target them. I heard from a friend that Gerry said the answer to taking fish lies in the wind. If you wish to shoot for Kings you will need to work deeper (50 to 100 fow), spoons have been mentioned more than anything but we did hear a few Kings were taken on flies. I can't stress the fact enough on how good this news is, after last season's lack luster early King fishing we feel blessed with the opportunity to target Salmon early on in our Eastern Basin. From what little I have heard Walleye fishing out of Oswego has been slow for the timely angler looking to cast a Rapala or walk a river wall at night. I did hear good reports from Tommy Germain about night trolling early last week. Size 18's are most popular but do not be afraid to run some smaller plugs early on in our season. Also there is activity of daily anglers drifting worms on the west side of the river between the bridges. Our Net Pen fish are looking to be released very soon, water temps. in our marina are working there way into the low 60's, this means they need to go. They are getting weighed by a biologist tomorrow and will be ok'd for release. A tow into the lake and our work is done for the moment. Congrats to Joe Toomey of Irish Thunder for the 2009 Wilson Scotty win over the weekend, Joe had an impressive box each day including a 26+ lb. King in the mix on day 2. Joe personally thanked me for the flies. (: Team Cold Steel took 2nd place honors by less than 1 lb. OUCH, this team just repeats itself yearly on its success. Great job to many teams who fought hard in rough conditions. These Scotty events are Fuuuuunnnnnnn !!!!!!!!! I'm addicted, I wish there were more, I might just be single by the end of the season.... Can you say "King Me" Veteran angler Mike Conroy of Proteus Charters took a sweet 20# King off the green can this am. Mike was fishing BT's on the inside off 3 mile creek and figured he would venture out to the can for a bit. He reached 80 fow when a rigger down 35' fired.....................FISH-ON, Mike had just re-spooled with fresh 8 lb. test, a 20 minute fight en-sued before they brought the King to the net. The King was bouncing 19 to 21 on his scales, the King hit a new Legendary spoon red/silver. Nice job Mike keeping the home-town waters active while we are away playing in Wilson !!!!! Also heard more Kings were taken yesterday out of Mexico....

Fishing in front of Oswego remains very good, limit catches of Brownt Trout the norm. Kings were taken off Mexico yesterday, these were the first Kings taken from a boat targeting them in our area (from what we have heard anyway). Captain Red from Redline Sportfishing stopped by with a few images and gave us a few specifics, 40 to 60 fow, Kings came down 25 to 40 ft on spoons, 5 bites in total (: (: (: this in minimal time targeting them !!! Northeast winds today are not favorable to our Eastern Basin anglers. We are heading to Wilson for Scotty leg #2, 67 boats registered and Kings being taken daily, should be a good time, will report again Monday when we get back, if you are heading to Oswego this weekend the BT action is good, the markers off Nine Mile east and the green can off 3 mile creek west all good.

Brown Trout are abundant in O-Town, just talked to Kevin Davis off the Hat Trick who seemed quite happy with what was going on. Healthy numbers of 2 year old BT's coming from short water out to 40 fow, working anywhere from the surface early to 15 down off the riggers throughout the day. East of the shoot one day and West the next, winds dictating the direction the charters are running at times and maybe a change of scenery as well. Baits are varied, Smithwicks, Jr/ Thundersticks (black/silver, firetiger) and Michigan Stinger standard size and Dreamweaver Super Slims in various patters, chicken wing, black/silver, spoons with green/silver/black into the day working well. Kevin say's these BT's are hard fighting fish that look very healthy with very minimal lamprey scarring if any. Seems like just a matter of getting out and getting lines in the water to catch them, early am as always is best, the bite slows as you get into the later morning and into the day. More Atlantic Salmon than I have heard of in a very long time, Kevin took 3 yesterday alone, be aware these fish need to be 25" to keep, look for x-shaped spots and a forked tail in comparison to the box/square shaped tail of the Brown Trout. We have heard a few rumors of a couple boats stretching off shore just a bit looking for Salmon, other than incidental smaller non-mature Kings being taken along the shorelines we have not heard of Kings being taken that were targeted (Yet). These incidental Kings bring good news, I remember taking these same incidentals starting back in 2003, and running through 2006, each of which season led into a spring King fishery all our Eastern Basins anglers cashed in on rewardingly. 2007 and 2008 these same incidentals were not common, the 2007 season saw the Kings coming into our Eastern Basin a bit later in the spring, 2008 this spring King fishery did not happen. Soooooooo, we can only hope our 2009 season is starting off like 2003 - 2006........ On a side note concerning King size for 2009, after the 1st leg of the Scotty in Port Dalhousie this past weekend I would come to the conclusion our 09 King season will see bigger Kings than last year, our catches were 2 to 4 lbs. heavier per Salmon. Plenty of Kings taken and a remarkable and very vibrant fishery is a heavy understatement concerning this Canadian based early King season fishery. As good as this sounds the terrible weather has played havoc already, maybe good - maybe bad as when the waters become stable the blood-bath type scenery can happen. This weekend I fished waters with Team Screamer from 20 miles across the Canadian border to a few miles West of Wilson. We took Kings, Lakers and Coho, but again we had to deal with dead flat/high sun conditions (which can slow action) at times to storm-front type conditions with 5 to 7 ft waves and gusty winds (which can slow action). Unstable weather to say the least, sorry no specifics at this time as we are nearing leg 2 of the Scotty's, just a note that unstable conditions and a fishery with awesome potential could be on its way. Fishing in Oswego has been good for Brown Trout, plenty of good catches to report from the Oswego Charters. Tommy TK said average size ranges from 2 1/2 to 4 lbs. with the occasional fish to 12 lbs. East and West of the shute are both holding fish he said, working the 10 to 15 ft range has been best. Smithwicks on the surface from boards and spoons stretched back off shallow riggers all in silver/black patterns have been the go-to's. BT's are not the only show either, Tommy has taken Lake Trout, Rainbows and today he took a 28" Atlantic weighing a hefty 8 1/2 lbs. The weather is playing havoc right now with today's winds icing the shoreline, temps. the last few days have ranged from 42 to 44 degrees. ![]() "Tom are you rich yet, if not you should be!!" "We need Hammer flies, can't keep em stocked, never sold product like this, we'll take all you got, you coming this way, today?" ![]() A-TOM-MIK Tom 37 lbs.
