!!! WOW !!! As our reports will wind down for the 2007' season in the short days ahead, my time to reflect on what went on this year will grow. What a season for us, what a ride it has been, our popularity was never expected to reach the level it has, hoped for yes, as we all hope for the best out of everything we do, but to have this kind of recognition, gee-wiz it's like a dream !!!!!!!

Through the past 5 years I have introduced myself and also done business with the Silver Horde brothers, Terry and Rob from Michigan Stinger, Tim Dawidiuk from Howie, Shane from Dreamweaver as well as a handful of others. I've always felt honored on each occasion, in some cases the tribulations of the business came into play, how unfortunate !!! I have tried to use my experiences with each and put 100% into my business, I feel it has worked and whether the relationships progress or deteriorate as the future draws near, I will always remember the "good feelings" of working with some of the best in the business.

I will post a few more reports here and there as there is much "Big Lake" fishing left throughout September, however our gears will change and we will now supply many shops with manufactured spawn for the anglers coming to chase our Salmonoids as they reach the river systems. I just wanted to take this chance while we still have a following to my reports page to extend one huge THANK YOU. Thanks to all for running the A-TOM-MIK product and giving me the "break" that is the toughest in this business to get. Whether you have purchased only one of our flies or spent a bundle with us, your following will be appreciated forever !!!!!!!!!!!

Cold Steel Sportfishing and Hat Trick Charters were our biggest source of info to fill all of you in on what goes on out of Oswego, if your ever have the desire to get on the big water, these guys are a great choice and have made it their life to work on the water, they simply love it. Kevin Davis and Andy Bliss will never get enough of the scene however as they continue to hone their skills come streamside, look them up, you will not be disappointed !!!!!!!! Thanks for all the other help we received for 2007' from the names listed on the links above, these guys are who made our reports possible. We would also like to thank the "Big Fin" Genes and Brian Castle, they were a constant source of valuable info on a weekly basis, these guys are also some of the best anglers known to Oswego at present.

Well, the wind came back this afternoon, morning charters managed a full morning but a good percentage of the pm charters cancled. The morning fishing wasn't the best, just a very slow pick at best, every boat scattered from the harbor to as deep as 600 fow in search mode, average take of Kings and Coho's 1 to 5 fish. Same items taking fish as usual, best of luck if you come up this weekend and plan on hitting the big lake, your going to need it, river fishing picking up however !!!!

Thursday, September 13, 2007

The blow is over, boats are wandering out and picking away after the fierce winds that blew through yesterday. Hat Trick was in the Harbor with a few Kings in the box and Cold Steel was over 300 fow with the same, Cold Steel had a green chip/green glow fly go several times and also a white spinnie/hammer account for another King in the box, all coming from 45 to 65 down, this info as of 8:45 am. Andy noted very warm water from top to bottom inside 275 fow. Will try to have some more info for you tomorrow if you plan on coming up for the weekend.

Huge September Kings love our A-TOM-MIK Trolling Flies

Fishing is still real good right now, from 50 to 150 fow and from Oswego to the front of the Salmon River, favorite choice of baits seems to be flies, flies, flies and more flies, they seem to be key right now, its simply all we hear. The "Big Kings" are still around as well and the anglers who are committing to full spreads of flies are taking the pigs !!!!!!!!!

A few Kings taken in the last couple days

Who say's you need "Meat" to take Kings like these? Just ask Patrick "Red" Thayer, Hat Trick Jim or Kevin Davis, Cold Steel Tom Burke or Andy, (Big Fin Gene & Gene, Brian Castle, Ace and crew), The Fish Doctor, - Ernie Lantiegne, TK Bob or Tommy, Screamer Dave & Joe, Liquid Plumber Del Casterline and team, Troy Creasy of LOO, TG fly creator Tommy Germain, the list goes on, flies will produce for you anglers and Big Kings love em' !!! Some of the best in the business will surely attest to that fact. Flies are "KICKING SOME SERIOUS ASS" !!!!! Tim Dawidiuk (Howie Fly) said to me at one point a few years back, "Trust them Tom", turns out to be the quote of 2007' ..........

Bad weather in the forecast in the next day or 2, watch the news and stay on the safe side always, as good as fishing is right now you might just want to miss a day or 2, Kings like these will still be there !!!

Hot attractor/fly combos the last few days including today:

#1, #41 Ultra Green Glow / Green E-Chip (overcast) (2 of the above 3 Kings came on this rig in lower-light conditions)
#2, #119 Glow Hammer or #T102 / White Spin Doctor or White E-Chip, or HammerTime SD
#3, #126 Pro/Am Fly / Chrome Spin Doctor or Chartreuse E-Chip (sun)
#4, #43 Ultra White Glow / White attractor (Luhr Jensen #0)

Fishing off Oswego remains good, daily catches range from (5 to 7 Kings and Coho's) to limits on some days. Waters being worked range from 60 to 180 fow and from 40 to 60 down , today the Cold Steel had a couple copper set-ups firing from 200 to 300 ft. sections. Beautiful brite silver heavy Coho's from 12 to 17 lbs. taken daily, tighten up them releases on the divers and riggers as these Coho's will play havoc with hook-ups. Attractor/flies still being favored by most, I asked a few anglers about any J-Plugs or any other baits but everyone mentioned they were only running attractor/flies. Best colors seem to be more of the same, white spinnies and hammer flies are taking Kings everyday, green chips and Green glo flies are good (#41) as well as chrome attractors and mirage or B flies also. These same set-ups accounted for 10 Kings and Coho's boated this am between Fish-On Mike and Cold Steel before 10am.

Update: Noon

Things are changing, strong NE winds making homogenized water, the Cold Steel took 7 bites in the am trip and worked for them all said Andy. Water temps. range from 62 degrees down 25 ft., to 59 degrees down 65 ft. The winds are still blowing some but more manageable than yesterday. Yesterday saw Kings coming from the surface to 70 down on much of the same items as usual, today's Kings ranged from 45 to 100 down, they came on the following:

400' copper/chartreuse chip/Pro/Am fly;
350' copper/green chip/green hammer fly;
200' copper/chrome chip (w/ch. holo tape)/mirage fly (Mike F. Fish-On rig);
240' wire diver/white chip/glow hammer;
240' wire diver/chrome/green SD/Pro/Am fly.

Note: Today's catch off the Cold Steel is a testament of the ability of a good charter service. In trying conditions like today and yesterday you can throw many "set" patterns of the previous days out the window. The particular lure combinations will usually still work, but to pattern "Staging Kings" usually just does not work when the lake "flips". Always keep in mind what the Kings were hitting in the days past, keep them items swimming but move them around and throw in some new variables. In Andy's take today he had several Kings take offerings that have been staples only a few days ago, and also took Kings on some newer attractor/fly combo's and also some items that have been known to work from the past. It is a great choice to mix things up in conditions like this but to never veer too far away from what the Kings were eating only a few short days ago. The Kings were all over but not "set-up" in any one area of the water column, Andy had 7 bites on 5 different items, that is nice work, keep this info in mind.

Anglers are covering much water, some heading West, while others heading to the plant. Good luck this weekend, the winds will dictate a lot as to what progresses in the days ahead and where the Kings and Coho's will be

HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEPH

Fishing remains very good, taking Lake Ontario Kings and Coho's right now mainly consists of putting your time in. Attractors and flies topping the list for many anglers over all other choices of baits. Best down speeds seem to be around 2.1 to 2.5, best depths in the water column are from 55 to 90 down over 60 to 200 fow. Wire divers set from 150 to 250, coppers out 200 to 400 and riggers down 55 to 90 all having their time. The LiveWire Spin Doctor and the Pro/Am fly is one very hot item, it just seems to get bit all day, a green E chip and a Sweet Pea fly also consistently very hot. Hammer flies and white attractors are dedictaded rigs for everyone we talk to every day as well. Mike Fiumano of Fish-On Motel and Charters had a hot hand today right up until 8:40 pm, he called to ask about a fly pattern he heard of and to see what it was (Wiggler Fly) and he took a King off a rigger down 65 over 85 fow off the college on a Little Boy Blue fly and white chip as we talked. Along with each item mentioned there are also various lures working for many. Some unreal fishing going on right now off Oswego as well as other areas of our Eastern Basin. Note: There are no great water flows in any major rivers and streams, its looking like an extended lake season for now !!!!!!!!!! BTW, Mike hooked and netted that King after dark, please keep the LOC rules in mind if your a derby angler but if not you can take Kings once the sun is down !!! Just as Mike,..........

A few E Mails:

Hi there - I wanted to thank you for my day today! I had a wonderful day fishing - we were 15/25 with 10/15 on your hammerfly alone! We placed in the tournament with a 28.12 King Salmon. The others were so big, they snapped a couple of flies off, and I couldn't be more excited to use your products again. Please keep me informed as new products are released and I would love to sign up to receive a catalog of available items. Thanks again for a great day fishing, Kip Mammano >br> Congrats Kip, certainly a great King to be proud of !!!

Hey Tom, I finished 6th in the Fair Haven Challenge last Saturday (Sunchaser) . That green and white custom Spin Doctor (HammerTime) with your Hammer fly took all 6 fish we entered. I broke off a good one with it too (drag too tight on my wire) or we may have finished higher. I had to enter a 15 pounder that killed our total weight and the one I broke off was "at least" 23-24lb.
Congrats Bill, Job well done !!!!!!!! 6 Kings on one rig, wow, that is great !!!! Thank you for running our product~!! Tom

A note to all LOC entrants: We watch the LOC board very closely, we recognize each and every entrant up there taken on our product. Thanks so much, it means the most to us, I think my daughter gets as excited as I do each time a new entrant on an atommic is listed, we watch together like hawks !!! (See, I can spell atomik too, lol) !!!!!!!!!

Monday, August 27, 2007 & Weekend Recap

Fishing remains stellar!!!!!! Wire divers firing at times before they even dig to their depths, copper set-ups going off while your letting them out and reeling them in !!!! Even riggers taking Kings and Coho's at times somewhat steady, a lot better than the poor rigger season we have had this year for some anglers. The Big Fin boys aboard the Sea Devil Tiara had a hot hand landing double after double, even a triple here and again, hottest set-up claimed Gene was a 300' copper section and a white/green edge spinnie and a glow hammer, (HammerTime glow rig) other hot items were wire divers out 175 to 225 with green E chips and #41 ultra green glow flies. The Screamer Boat had a smoking set-up off a wire diver set out 175 with a meat rig, froggy glow head and a green chip, 10 bites on that rig alone, Screamer did great running just a 5 rod spread, 2 wires, 2 riggers and a shute 300' copper. Dave say's "Oh man Tom, it's good out here!!!!" Dave never shows much expression, definitely the straight business type, as serious as they come when it boils down to taking LO Kings, Dave and Joe both, but I could hear the tremble in his voice that action was nothing less than fierce !! Cold Steels' Tom Burke say's as wild as the conditions have been throughout August with temps up and down like a roller-coaster, it seems to be that time of year where Mother Nature can throw what she may, but as the dust settles the Kings will continue to entertain! There just ready Tom claim's, the Kings are coming nicely. He also states the mix bags of nice Coho's as always this time of year are a pleasant bonus, even a few Rainbows mixed in daily takes. Andy Bliss has worked with Rob and Terry at Michigan Stinger for yet another unveiling, geesh, what "can't" be painted in a "Hammer theme" now days (He He He) Stay tuned for that, I heard Fat Nancy's had a few dozen of these painted but once Tom Burke witnessed Andy taking a second King off the back of the Cold Steel on one he went and purchased everyone that was left !! C'Mon Tom, you didn't need them all !! Looks like an idea for next season in the making......... Fish on Motel Mike, has been running a new fly creation he came up with in a yellow/mirage pattern, again another idea for next year, Mike say's it has taken Kings every day since we built it !!! It hasn't even hit the market yet and Mike wants it in a glow as well, lol. Think I should make Mike wait??? As many rigs that have been super hot for so many anglers seems I am still hearing the Hammer holding its own being ran with mostly anything white, even chartreuse chips with the hammer during sun has Kevin Davis loving that combo, one of his many favorites. As we continue to distribute our goods around the Eastern Basin from Sodus to Pulaski in many cases they don't even hit the wall and there are aggressive anglers waiting to buy them up.............THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THAT !!!! In the last week these have been the top sellers in our Eastern Basin shops, shops not being able to keep the pegs full at all. We are pretty much delivering product almost everyday.
In order..........

1st Glow Hammer Fly
1st Hammer Fly
1st Pro/Am Fly
1st Sweet Pea Fly
Yes, all tied for first, simply cannot produce enough, they sell-out usually within 24 hours of delivery
2nd Big Fin Fly
3rd Mirage Glow
4th Green Hammer
5th Crinkle Green
6th Ultra White Glow
7th Ultra Green Glow

Note: We purchased every Penn 345 GTi available from 5 distributors we have been dealing with in the Northeast alone, as of last week Penn was depleted of these reels with no dates given for more shipments of them from Penn, (of course that could change in a days notice, but we wanted to try our best not to run out for our customers), we now have 17 left as of today Aug., 27, the season will be winding down very soon but I can almost guarantee these reels will be gone in the days ahead. The Tekota's are still readily available from our distributors.

Saturday & Sunday, August 25 & 26, 2007

Fishing is tremendous, if you know me well, you know I try my best to tell it like it is, if things are slow I say they are slow, so often many will say "We killed them" "We crushed em", and so on..............Well, if there ever was a time, to truly "Crush them" this is it, this weekend the Kings were slaughtered, that's a mighty intense word but oh so true. During my ritual talks this weekend to some of the anglers who regularly feed me info, I was put on hold, set down and forgotten about, told to "Hang On" while I slid across the boat deck, I was apologized to as I was dropped, and simply told "Sorry, not now"..........All due to consistent King action out of Oswego. There were no good times for me to call anyone, everyone was catching them, all the time!!!!!!!!! This may very well be one of the best times I ever remember, (even taking the ole "Hay Day's" into consideration) this for so many anglers, doing so well, from the first rods set in the water this weekend throughout every hour I would try to contact, Kings were continually hitting the decks. As far as lure choice or particular presentations, I received no hard info of what item at what depth, bits and pieces for me to put together and that's about it. From 55 fow to no deeper than 275 fow action was HOT, HOT, HOT. I did hear the term "Hammer" and also the term "It don't matter Tom" many times. I guess it's just that sort of time where, "If you were ever thinking about making a trip to Eastern Lake Ontario, or Oswego................Now is certainly it !!!!

A few items worth a mention from this weekend:

Congrat's to "The Screamer Boy's" for winning the 4th annual Fair Haven Challenge, yet again, only by ozs. but hey, that's all it takes, they also took the biggest King at #24 and change. WTG guys !!!

Congrat's to Rick Droslyn, ("Team Cold Steel / A-TOM-MIK" member) for taking it upon himself to build a team and participate in this event to compete and have some fun. Rick had a hot copper rig that just kept firing, after a catastrophe in the field and losing his one and only 450 copper section, he ran in, docked the boat, drove to my house, pleaded for a new rig cause he had it "dialed in" he claimed, so we hooked him up, he then drove back to Wright's, headed back out to the promise land and took several more Kings to add to his weight, all good for an 8th place spot out of 54 boats. Nicely done Rick, your first solo built participation and an awesome showing in your intensity level alone!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats to each and every angler who are holding the current top spots in the LOC, Hank Cavalli, James Mckemmie, Sean Morris, and to Del and John on the Liquid Plumber for putting up a current 1st place King at 31.14 lbs. The king hit a HammerTime spinnie and a B fly, also great job to Pro-Staffer Bob Stevens of Sunny 2, for rounding out the top 2 spots with a 31.03 lb. King that hit a Revolator and an A-TOM-MIK

Kevin Davis off the Hat Trick had a 40" King today that only weighed in the upper #20's, certainly a heavy fish, but the King had 3 lamprey's on him and was very long and narrow.

Kings are being taken with 200' copper sections to 450' copper sections, on wire divers out 125 to 300 and from 40 to 80 down on riggers, and every attractor/fly combo imaginable, if you were to read through our past few weeks worth of reports, probably every color/pattern/scheme mentioned are working. We are in the "Hay Days" at present.........

E Mail question from Maine::: Atommik, My buddies and I follow your reports religiously, thanks a lot for them. We also use your products a lot, mostly your flies. Congratulations to you for having your name on the LOC standings so often. Would you be willing to inform us why you believe your success is so overwhelming? or what it is about your flies that keep everyone so interested or why they catch so many fish? Thank you in advance, Doug S.

Doug: Thank you for your questions and remarks, and thank you for using our goods. I never honestly feel we are overwhelming any market, I would always hope to keep interest up as this is my livelihood, its a full-time gig for me, I want and hope to make the best of any chances I have to stick around for a very long time. Anglers seem to consistently thrive on new ideas or concepts, that has worked for us.

I feel we have also caught the right breaks in the business and have been lucky enough to get and keep the right names behind us, while the greener or up-n-coming big lake angler can respect some of the top names in the big lake scene, to have the right names behind your product makes for an easy sell to the new crowd when looking for this following from them.

I also feel that our product has many very strong points that aide in its/our success. Some of them we use to sell our name, ex. Owner, Seaguar, and of course there are a few points of our manufacture that are kept secret. This again, partly due to the feedback we have received through the years from our Pro-Staffers doing a great job for our name. I am very optimistic and feel very lucky to be where we are today.

Congrats to Adrian Brunn (ala. Skeiner) for his first place LOC Sheepshead, taken on an A-TOM-MIK Innovator rig
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Notice the stinger Owner, that Sheepshead was NOT getting away...........It's a good thing Cold Steel team member Rick wasn't aware of that catch, he would have run you down for that fish !!!!

Report from Ray B
Hi Tom, After picking up my new Penn 345 reel with the 600 feet of your copper on it we tried it for the first time Sunday about 11:00 AM. Fished the first few hours with zero action and then talked with a friend, also fishing out of Dowie Dale, and he suggested deeper water and a slower speed. We ended up fishing west of the plant in 300-500 feet of water at speed of less than 2.5 mph. Ended up with four salmon 11 - 21 pounds, still in the shiny silver condition. Fish were caught from about 11 AM to 3 PM, and three of them came on the copper line setup using one of your LiveWire attractors I purchased matched up with the Pro/Am fly you gave me. I had a bit more than 550 feet of line out. First fish on the copper came within 15 minutes of setting it out! My two grand kids took turns reeling it in. They later named it the "Monster Rod" (MR). That turned out to be a great day for us, four for four. Thanks Tom

Much action from everywhere, in the tight water up high and out in the depths down deep. Constant changing conditions keep things rather trying but as Andy Bliss states off the Cold Steel "Patience is Key" "It's just like a Coors Light out there, crisp, cold and clear!" There is so much info I gathered today I do not know where to start. The Cold Steel had rods just a pop'n most the day on Thursday, hot copper and hot wire rigs key to the great success!! Still being chased around by the wind even in the Cold Steel 36' Egg Harbor but managing action no matter what Mother Nature throws this way. One hot copper rod Thursday was a 300' section and a white spinnie/glow hammer rig. Many Kings brought to the net on that rig alone over 125 to 200 fow right out the front door. Hot wire action out 150 to 175 with chrome attractors and Sweet Pea flies, just let them swim, if they go cold for a bit just hang in there cause when they start firing they will go time after time (run these in the sun). Sweet Pea flies? Who ever would have thought a green/silver fly would produce the way this fly has produced in the last week or two alone, DUH Green and Silver? LOL We can all thank Andy for building this pattern, sometimes the simplest ideas pan out to be the best. How many Kings have we all taken in the last 20 years on a simple green/silver hammered NK 28........... As hot as that rig has been and it has been hot, today was a Hammer day, I had to chat with no less than 6 anglers today that were sold on the Hammer rig, Kevin Davis quoted today: "Man, had to turn the VHF off, what did everyone ever do to take Kings before the Hammer fly?" Well Kev-O, I don't know but please do not say that too loud cause it's paying the bills........... Kevin has had a hot hand with back to back limits of Kings, in am and pm trips, 2 days in a row, now that's catch'n !!! Kevin likes his Glow Hammers but anyone that knows Kevin well, knows he likes to tie many of his own patterns to make them just a bit different. Luckily enough he keeps relying on that glow hammer also. His chartreuse chip and glow hammer rig fires every day he says, often sounding like a broken record when we talk. The Chrome chip or LiveWire rig coupled up with Pro/Am fly also held its own as it has for a while now, another mention has been the "DewBee Rig" this a chartreuse NBK Doctor and Big Fin fly, accounting for many Kings in the coolers of local captains and rec's alike. Today saw Kings taken as shallow as 70 fow just 30 ft down, and Kings as deep as 600 fow 95 ft down, and many areas in-between. TK Charters took a quad today on exceptionally large Coho's, Coho's now a part of many anglers takes, they are showing up nicely as they do every year right about now, biggest we heard of so far was a plump 18 lb. short/fat silver bullet. TK Tommy has had his green chip/#23 fly working great, Tommy was quite perturbed when he got bitten off from his favorite rig and lost his last #23, darn, hate when that happens !!!!!!!!!!!! Tommy regrouped and loaded up with fresh 23's and had his green chip/crinkle green rig going again off his coppers.

Patrick Thayer of Redline Sportfishing will get the nod today and his image on the board of a dynamite rig that has taken exactly 20 Kings in the last 4 days. "Red" is one hell of a guy as he brought the rig to my house and retired it upon my request, I wanted to take a few shots of it and hang it at "Room A-TOM-MIK" as a keepsake. I rigged it up for Pat 5 days ago and asked him to run it each day and keep a tally of the Kings it would take, the number was 20, even one that would have been in 1st place in the LOC if his clientele had been entered, while talking with Red on the phone all I heard was his mate screaming in the background, "Can you believe it, a 30" girth", "a 30 inch girth", he yelled that about 4 times, the King weighed a short/fat 33 lbs., poor Red, but shame on you !!!!!!!!!!! Great fishing out there anglers, despite the unruly conditions !!!!!!!

"Red" ran this rig off various coppers and wire divers out of Mexico, NY, and made a scratch above his cockpit every time a King hit the deck off this rig. Running metal type dodgers is already becoming old-school after a few short years of pulling flies in the Eastern Basin of Lady-O. On a very serious note Red is a very successful Captain who "makes metal work" and runs them with confidence, metal is much less speed forgiving than the plastic rotators of today. Taking Kings isn't always easy by any means, but running plastic helps in the learning curve of this art.

and........... this adventure was no plea to try en move a bundle of these attractors, as I have very few and many of the shops I normally cater to do not have many either, (if any at all), if you would like one you better look for a like Luhr Jensen, you will have better luck finding them, I simply wanted to prove that these things take Kings, plus it was fun !!!!!!!!!!!

Would you pay 16.99 for a new rig like this beaten one? Clearcoat missing from the A-TOM-MIK green edge Trash Can, worn fluoro. around the hook area, broken rattles (which were replaced twice) tathered up, beaten #29 green mirage fly, and lastly a broken Owner treble and an SSW single that the paint all wore off.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
20 Kings and 4 days later. Don't feel all that bad for Red, he got a bright new shiny rig to go destroy again, !!! YOUR THE MAN RED, thanks for a job well done bud !!!

Update: 11:am

Just dropped Kevin a quick call from the Hat Trick, he was shaking his head he said, they did manage 7 adults but things are changing fast on Lady O, Stiff SE winds are moving water temps. around rather fast changing things up on us, his 2- 200 copper sections took 4 of his 7 fish, one loaded with a plain white spinnie/hammer and the other loaded with a chartreuse chip/B fly. Other hits came off a diehard and another chartreuse chip ran off 2 riggers, one set at 40 down and one at 50. Kevin had 54 degrees down 50 ft over 162 fow. Just one wire bite this am 95 ft out (I only know it was a spinnie, didn't catch the combo) Kevin said Mike F from "Fish On Lodge" was out over 600 ft and it was sloppy just like yesterday. Mike wasn't doing well and was headed back in to the shorter waters, he had only managed a couple Kings, no other info.

Update: 4:50 pm

We gave Bob & Tommy TK a call from TK Charters and they said they were having a real good afternoon, the fan was still blowing hard from the SE giving the lake a good 2 ft Salmon chop. They were right out the front door in 150 fow working waters from 135 to 165, best presentation was a wire diver out 130 with a green crinkle #23 and a plain Jane green chip (took 3 adults in the pm trip so far on that one rig) Tommy had temp. in the upper 50's down 30 ft (WOW) never mentioned another rig they were running but he seemed hopeful and was very happy with the action they had so far. He figured it would be the same show again tomorrow in the am when I asked what he expected due to the wind conditions . I guess the TK boys don't mind where the temps are, he sounded confident of the conditions saying "They'll come !!!". Thanks guys for the report, go get em !!!!!

Update: 11:pm

What a weekend, couldn't ask for worse sloppy waters, delays in charters going out, sick clientele, wasted trips from our out of town friends who get here just to sit dockside and wait. But, once the smoke settles here and there and a few anglers start wandering out, things are very entertaining to say the least. Many hot catches in-between the waiting, many limit trips, and large adults with stories to share of multiple King's taken at once! Today the Cold Steel finally set away from the dock at 1:pm with many boats waiting patiently for the first reports from Tom and Andy. They battled their way through some unfavorable seas and sat down in 400 fow, not long after getting set-up things started happening with rigger rods going off and wire lines being stripped off the Tekota 600's. Fish-on was all that was heard for a couple straight hours as the Cold Steel boated their limit of Kings and headed back to the dock, 14 kings landed out of 18 bites at 5:30 pm. Here are some of the key's to their success today: First and foremost today was the speed issue, critical to the catch said Andy, the Moore had to read 2.4 to 2.5 DS or the rods didn't fire as fast, SOG didn't mean all that much as long as their spread of 6 rods loaded up with all attractors were hitting that key down speed. The 6 rod spread consisted of 2 wires out 275 to 300, 3 riggers down 90 to 115, and just one pretty hot copper set-up out 600 very long feet. All presentations took action with the lone copper rig ran out the shute accounting for 6 landed Kings (Chrome SD/Mirage fly). Attractor combo's that were ran on the other 5 rods: LiveWire/Pro/Am (wire divers), HammerTime rig, Chrome SD/Sweet Pea Fly, and one other white SD/hammer (riggers). Today seemed like a Hammer Fly day to a couple others we talked to as well, all rigs mentioned took Kings. Another important specific was our rattles, Andy had rigged a fresh fly up once and took 3 Kings on it, the rig went dead so he pulled it to check for tangles a dragger or whatever could have been wrong, after a close inspection he noticed the rattle had been crushed inside the tubing, he changed it out, set it back down and within 10 minutes it fired. Andy had working rattles on all 6 rigs at all times, changing out broken ones twice. (Note: A-TOM-MIK is aware of the issue with our rattles being crushed after only a few Kings sometimes, we are having new prototypes made to see if we can maintain the productiveness with thicker glass, we are sort of in a catch 22 position, do we just deal with it cause they are working or try some thicker or different shaped rattles to conquer the issue, not so sure yet what the outcome will be, we are enjoying the success from this option in our flies and hate to lose what we have for now, time will tell). While picking rods to head in with 12 Kings in the cooler, 2 more rods went off and 2 more Kings were landed that had to be released, that is why the count of 14 Kings was noted. Many others did well today on much of the same stuff Andy also claimed, from the looks of the LOC (7 Kings weighed, all on attractors, its looking like flies are lighting things up for everyone) !!!!

Cold Steel photo: LiveWire/Pro/Am and HammerTime rig. Note: The King on the right had the tourney harness from the Hammer fly embedded, the fly had just been removed and was covered with blood, it does not look like a Hammer fly but Andy noted that it was, these are some extremely nice Kings that weighed 28.5 and 29 lbs. and yes, Andy was scolded for not having derby tickets, shame !!! lol, they would have certainly held up for quite a few days !!! I guess when you are Cold Steel, Kings like this are just Kings, in my book I would have been sick without derby passes.

Update Noon

Sloppy, bumpy, miserable, yuck !!! That pretty much sums it up for the water conditions out of O-Town this am, 4 to 5 ft waves coming from the NW and just a whistling................(Laying down a bit as the day progresses however, for the moment) However, despite the sh.....ty conditions we have to work fishing was very good today. Hat Trick delayed for an hour for the am trip, then another hour, but finally got out there after what seemed like a rather long wait. But once set up in 375 to 400 fow things started happening fast. Wire divers off either side set at 300 and 325 with like "LiveWire" attractors started firing immediately. Flies of choice for Kevin were Pro/Am flies off these rigs, he said they have been doing great on these rigs during bad weather and green water clarity conditions. "They just love this rig in rough green water", down temps are certainly not stable, from 375 to 425 fow good down temp was at 115 to 125 down, get out to about 500 fow and it is at 100 down, you need to stay constantly informed from your down temp units to keep your items at the proper depths (lately one great depth has been on the warm water side of the thermo-bar) this meaning if you are marking 60's to 70 degree water down 100 ft and the temps start to drop into the 50's from 100 on down always keep a portion of your spread of lures just above the cold water about 5 ft. However, many Kings will always come from "the ice" (colder waters) but to keep your wire diver's and coppers just on the warmer water edge will usually pay dividends when the fish are on the bite. More info to come if I can get time, Hat Trick limited with 9 Kings by the end of the am trip. Update: 2pm Tommy Germain also took a 4 man limit in the am with many Kings coming on the same rig as Kevin and also a white glo SD/hammer fly, a 450 copper section was very good with the LiveWire rig, his wire divers out 325 and 350 were rigged up with the LiveWire/Pro/Am combo. Tommy loves to use the term "We're Whalin em", he was using this term today. Update 4:pm Patrick Thayer out of Mexico was doing well after moving his am trip to the PM, at 4:pm he said the lake was very workable. Pat was working depths of 110' down over 275 to 300 fow, he had his wire divers going good with our Trash Can/green edge and green/mirage flies (#29's) Sounds like its happening today my friends, we just need to deal with the winds.................Best of luck LOC fisherman, should be some fished weighed this weekend for sure !!!!!!!!!!!!! A-TOM-MK's guess at the LOC poll is #37.03 (: Just dropped Kevin a call at 4:30pm, he was too busy to talk, one client was fighting a King while Kevin was putting the net under another>>> Jimmy was excited today and said he was expecting another limit this afternoon, he didn't like being off-shore that far he stated.

In regards to an E mail sent to us after reading our reports today. Concerning our terminology referring to the "warm water edge". The warm water edge refers to the water in the 60 degree range in relation to today, above the break or above the water in the 50 degree range. Example: Say you have 65 degrees down to 90 ft (over how much water does not matter), then it drops to 60 degrees down 100 ft., then it gets in the 50' s below that. In this scenario the warm water edge refers to the water from 90 to 100 ft down. As of lately the warm water edge refers to the water once it gets in the 60's (or above the break) In a different point of view (not today's report) when we may use the term "warm water edge" it may refer to the following: Say you have a stiff break down 100 ft (over how much water does not matter again) Say you have: 55 degrees down 90 ft., 54 degrees down 95 ft., 53 degrees down 100ft., then at 105 down it breaks sharply to 43 degrees, in this scenario the 53, 54 and 55 degree water is referred to as the "warm water". This gets very involved but all of this info is key at times and makes the difference between being the hero or the zero. Once we get into this time of year these temps will not always matter due to staging characteristics for Kings. That is why it is key to be "on your game" at all times. We all will have days we just take fish at will, but there are always them anglers: (Ernie L., Vince P., our buddy Kev-O and Jimmy from the Hat Trick) that always just seem to "do very well for themselves". There's a lot out there to know.......

Seeing as though I am on a roll today typing away, another comment I thought about after re-reading my earlier report that I feel is very important was the fact that Tommy Germain and Kevin both had wire programs working at different depths. I thought about it for a minute in regards to today being one of them days that down temps. really seemed to matter. I sell Kevin bulk spools of 20# SS wire for his divers, Tommy uses 30# Mason, it took Tommy more "wire out" to generate his strikes. Keep this in mind if your out with your buddies on different boats and one angler has a hot set-up and you have what you feel is a like set-up but it isn't firing!! What pound trolling weight did that last hit come off? How full was your wire reel? What direction were you headed? Was your diver rod lying flat? Was that attractor stretched out? The guys that are dialing in these specifics just happen to be some of the best, there are important reasons why they are paying attention to what seem like simple details.................

Update: 11:50am

Fishing remains pretty good despite the winds that are blowing my deck chairs 2 houses down, lol. Most anglers are hanging inside the 200 fow range but there are still a few finding their home out as deep as 500 fow. This am was very bumpy but for those who ventured out things were good. Right now 11:50 am, favorable down temps (low 50's) are down 110 ft over 160 fow out the front door. Today seemed to be a white attractor/Hammer fly day as the guys we chatted with all had that fire more than once. Tommy Germain off the Little Whip actually favored that rig over his TG fly/white chip rig for the first time I ever remember him admitting it. Coppers out 450 to 500 and wire divers out 300 to 325 best, and rigger bites still struggling. From the sounds of the wind gusting as I sit here and tie tourney harnesses, I think most of the boats left out will be heading for their docks soon.

Update: Noon

Kings are being taken each day, some days better than others but no hot areas or depths lasting for more than an am or pm trip. Constant changing conditions are the only set pattern as of lately, this weekend saw some great catches as well as the boats that struggled. Putting your time in was the name of the game. Kings were taken from 150 fow to over 600, some 15 miles NW of the lighthouse. Spoon programs while fishing in the upper water column (top 45 ft) and attractor/fly programs while the Kings were deeper. Today only 1 boat ventured out into the nasty conditions, the Cold Steel had clientele that simply wanted to be on the water at any extreme. Tom Burke set up in 150 fow and trolled NW to 400 taking several hits and a couple Kings hitting the deck along the way, they turned around and headed back for the shallows and did the same again, after 3 hours they headed back to the dock with Kings in the box. Coppers out 400 and wire divers out 250 to 275 all taking shots and landing Kings, no rigger bites this am. Best rig was a green E-Chip and a #41 Ultra Green Glow fly. Other bites came on chartreuse chips and Big Fin flies, no spoon bites, Andy was running just one spoon but could not get it to fire off a rigger this am, it was a Stinger Stingray Frog Circus Freak, when they want spoons in that upper water column Andy has had success with this spoon throughout the past few days. Also throughout the weekend these were a few rigs we heard of that all took Kings and had their moment:

Chrome SD or chip/Mirage or Big Fin Fly
Chartreuse chip/Mirage or Big Fin Fly
Chartreuse chip/glow Hammer
HammerTime Rig
White chip/TG
Green chip/#41
Chrome chip (Chartreuse tape, doctored rig) Pro/Am or Mirage fly
Diehards in Stingers and NK's
NBK's in Stingers
Andy's Frog Circus Freak Stinger
Glow Alewife

Best rig from everything mentioned while the Kings are below 60 ft seemed to have been a chartreuse chip/Big Fin fly (during sun), this has been a steady producer, just like this time last year, once we got into later August last year and the algae content grew like it has this year, this rig was hot on many, many, days, even out-producing the dreaded hammer rig once we get into this later season.

BTW, the lake has settled down and the boats are now heading out....................

Friday, August 10, 2007

East winds continue to move temps around, the lake was nice this am and a few more fish were being taken than that of the last few days. Some captains chasing the BT's and some sticking it out for the Kings, all with some sort of success. Hat Trick said the Kings and BT's are mixed from 70 to 150 fow, more BT's in the shallower waters however, most everything coming in the top 50 ft over these depths with a few Kings down to 60 to 65' also. Keep in mind when the fish move to this upper water column spoons will shine especially for the first few hours. Kevin took 9 bites in the first couple hours alone and all but 2 on spoons. Other boats like the Cold Steel had the BT's going pretty good also to the west near the can (known BT waters). The water is green and the favorite spoons are greens and greens with glows, NBK and diehard patters always good staples, I often sound like a broken record when mentioning these spoon selections but these items produce and they produce often. Kevin's attractor/fly bites came off the hammer fly with a chartreuse chip and 300' .037 copper, other hits were of 150 to 200' sections of copper loaded with the spoons mentioned. One King was in fall bloom, dog teeth, very dark and looking ready for river action, the BT's were fat and fresh but also some were mixed in with fall colors as well. Things are looking up anglers, if your heading out this weekend keep an eye on that upper water column and keep spoons in the mix up high, especially early, getting a very early start will favor these presentations even more. Remember when targeting these shorter water depths there are also big fish around, taking Kings to 30 lbs. or even bigger up high first thing in the am is very possible as they continue to move into our waters migrating towards the flows of the Oswego and Salmon Rivers.

Update: 2 pm

Update: Better catches coming in today from many boats, several more lunkers as well, hot BT action in the 60 to 80 fow range and Kings coming from the 120 to 150 fow range, down 35 to 65. Heard a report from a creel survey in the East Charter marina there were Kings from 27 to over 30 lbs. and a few of them. Large fish are around like we have been seeing for a few days now, and better fishing to boot "at the moment". East winds can change things however, guess we will see what happens.........."Oswego LOC Salmon" I know your out there !!!!! ....................

Thursday, August 9, 2007

Tough fishing persists, unstable weather conditions mean constant changing temps. in the water columns. One day anglers will venture off-shore to 600 fow, the next they find themselves scraping the bottom in 70 fow. Not very favorable for targeting Kings who like stable staging environments to get ready for their final mission. However there is good news among the wondering minds in many of the local captains daily thoughts.........THERE ARE BIG FISH AROUND NOW........In the last 3 days we have heard of as many as 5 kings taken over the 27# mark, even though my younger influence leaves me unsure what this means, fact of the matter is the LOC Salmon has one-hell-of-a chance as usual to come out of Eastern Basin waters.............maybe even Oswego again like last year. As the creme of the crop Kings filter into our waters from the West it will be a crap shoot to see how big they really will be this year. The Canadian GOSD event has been seeing Kings for 5 weeks now from 28 to 33 lbs. just to make a top 10 spot on a weekly basis. Lets all hope for some favorable water this class of Kings will be looking for out of our port here in O-Town................., Sodus to Pulaski can expect better days to come. For now we will take what the fish gods will offer us and so far a few of these hogs we have been seeing are a nice sight. As far as specifics taking fish in the last few days, it has been a little of everything, spoons and attractor/flies topping the list right now. Nothing out of the ordinary as most are throwing everything at them they could possibly think of due to the rather trying conditions we have to work. Copper sure is getting its air-time from many anglers, from across the lake in Ontario, Canada to right here in our neck of the woods the stuff is highly valued and trusted by so many. It just consistently performs, even in times like these.

Congratulations to Team Hot Rods for winning the 4th Annual Tightline's Shootout in Ontario, Canada this past weekend. The field limited to 40 boats saw some of the biggest names in the business, just to come out #1, what a feat !!! Should I mention this is win #2, 2 years in a row for the A-TOM-MIK Pro Staff Team led my Matt and son Eric Santoro !!!!! Key fish came on Spin Doctors and A-TOM-MIK T100 and T107. One other hot rig was a green/blue Luhr Jensen #4 J-Plug ran off a 200' section of our .037 copper borrowed from fellow staffer Jordan De Jong, now that's what teamwork is all about!!! Great job men, way to go. Certainly a steaming victory back to back. !!! WOW !!! I think it's safe to say Matt has that new North Coast dialed in !!

Had an interesting chat with the "Cold Steel" and "Hat Trick" boats today, both claimed the Salmon Fishing remains very challenging, you can put a few Kings in the box but they certainly aren't jumping in the boat. Today saw some boats back to chasing the BT's (70 to 100 fow) while others stuck it out in the depths (400 to 600 fow). Seems the strong Easterly blows from yesterday are finally catching up with the Eastern Basin waters and drawing the ice towards the shoreline. You could watch the water temp's changing by the hour early today. The BT action started in 70 fow on the bottom in the am for a few hours until the ice started moving in pushing the BT out to 80 then 90 then 100 by noon. Even though the Westerly winds were prevailing as of 4pm today things were changing in tune from the effects from yesterday. Andy Bliss and Tom Burke did venture to 600 fow and manage 4 Kings before the waves grew to about 4 to 5 footers, a bit too much to deal with and be enjoyable for the clientele so the retreat took place. Kevin said the Kings are definitely in that more stable deep water but you just can't get to them until the weather calms some. Hat Trick's action accounted for 7 BT's until even the shorter waters were looking ugly as well. The BT's were taking anything with green in Stingers and the 4 Kings from Cold Steel came on 3 different items, one was a green chip with a #41 Ultra Green Glow fly, 2 came off a white chip with a glow mirage fly and the 4th King came off a Gator Stinger. Depths of these Kings were from 75 to 95 down over 600 fow. 400' of copper and 230 on a wire diver set at 2.5. Lets hope for more stable weather for more consistent King taking conditions in the days ahead!!!!!!!

Oswego fishing is spotty, temperatures are setting back up down deep in close, this due to the warm stable conditions. Salmon are being taken in less numbers but in tighter than they have been, 150 to 300 fow has been ok today. Set your items down 75 to 100 ft and cover some water until you find some bait, action will come but as of the moment you will need to work for you fish, we are still hearing of some limits but they are definitely coming harder for the time being. Coppers are constant producers for many anglers, each and every "new to copper" angler we talk to can't wait to share their stories, from catastrophes to success the art is becoming commonplace. For the experienced guys 3 coppers in the water at all times are paying off especially when the fish get tough and get into that "lock-jaw" mode. One copper at least down the shute will surprise you during mid-day tough times. One day we hear spoons are taking a fair share and the next its the attractors again, today some key presentations and attractors went well for some local captains:

These rigs were favored on 350' to 400' copper sections or 250' to 300' off wire divers, today rigger bites just didn't come except for a few first am:

Chartreuse chip/mirage fly
Innovator rig (We are sold out of this rig)
Chrome SD or E Chip/mirage or Big Fin Fly
White SD or Pro Troll/glow or the original Hammer

Fishing is proving to be somewhat more difficult this afternoon compared to days past and this morning. There were Kings in the box for those we talked to but things certainly weren't fast and furious by any means. Some bait around but only scattered marks at best. This am TG Fly creator Tommy Germain had a hot hand with some chartreuse chips and TG flies, he has been running a pattern of white Spin Doctors and Hammers faithfully for a few weeks now and opted for the first time to pull some of them off and switch them out for the chartreuse chips. The ultra bright conditions shut Tommy's white spinnies down when he gave into the change, it paid off nicely !!! "We had one copper just-a-smok'n" Tommy said, one 400' section loaded on a Tekota 800 went off 7 times all with adults over 550+ fow. Just a stock chartreuse ruddered chip/TG fly combo ran down the shute made for some happy clientele.

*** WIN *** WIN *** WIN *** WIN *** WIN ***

A-TOM-MIK is nearing the 100 mark for rigged copper reels sold. (HINT): In the last several weeks in our reports we mentioned one time how many reels we were close to selling. The lucky angler who purchases rigged copper reel #100 will receive 20 free fly bodies or 10 Tourney rigged series flies w/ Seaguar/Owner. (Value over $60.00) Many of our rigged reel sales include reels in pairs, if your purchase happens to include 2 rigged reels we will offer both options. That would be a value over $125.00 !!!!! And of course it would include your choice of flies !!!!
!!! Good Luck !!!
??? How lucky are you ???

Update we have a winner, Congratulations to JIM MCKEMMIE from Belchertown, MA., Jim chose 10 free Tournament Series Trolling Flies along with his purchase of a new Penn 345 loaded with 600' of copper. Jim purchased fully rigged copper reel # 100 !!!

??? To Rattle? or Not to Rattle ???
After a few talks with Tom on Skype I decided to test the theory of Rattle or No Rattle? Lately I am pretty much convinced. After 3 straight days of swapping identical rigs back and forth, these rattles definitely made a difference !!. Hands down the A-TOM-MIK concept of a rattle improved the catch ratio incredibly!! This 28 lb. King was caught on a Big Fin B Fly behind a Yellow NBK Spin Doctor on a 300 foot section of Tom's .037 copper. That rattle/fly has been so HOT its ridiculous!!! I'm convinced ............ Dave Sullivan and his little guy Corey taking a few ShowTime Kings, even pro's like Dave like to mix it up and wind down some with the family after Pro/Am wins, Dave and team were the first Canadians to put it together for the 2007 Nigara Pro/Am win in the Pro division. Dave told us what a few key Kings came on for his win, we will give you one guess, it also rhymes with Jammer !!!! Dave also claim's one of his best presentations right now is a 250' section of our .037 7 Strand copper with a SD/fly.

Tom, what a great outing, 14 for 24 and each and every hit came on your flies, thanks for making a great product and keep up the good work. These are my buddies, Timmy and Bert, Timmy caught most of them, as Bert tired after the first few off the coppers. Thanks again, we love running flies, no spoons for us, all flies all the time and all the Salmon you want !!!!

Looks like your going to need to get 5 to 8 miles behind you to find the more stable water out of O-Town. Kevin Davis was up to his normal antics again moving off from the un-stable closer water depths and finding some favorable temps. down 75' over 525'. You get inside these depths Kev-O said and all your gonna find is colder water nearer the shoreline, as cold as 40's down 40 ft over 200 fow and some spots colder yet. Hat Trick had 5 big guys in the box so far in today's pm trip from areas of 450' and deeper. One good item today was his shute rod loaded with a yellow diehard in the stingray size MS, this item was sitting down 70 ft on the warm water edge of the break back 80. The Hammer Stingray also accounting for a Salmon in that position first off in the trip. Another item Kevin has had some luck with lately are the fish-shaped dial type attractors (Smartfish) the chartreuse blade with a Big Fin fly off the wires has accounted for some fish in the past few days including today, it's a good one when the sun is high. Other basics having their times each day. There was some bait with hooks not far off here and there over 525'. The Westerly winds were also doing their trick today moving temps. around. Kings are "about" as usual, we are getting images sent to us daily from our Canadian friends and locals alike with Salmon weighing from 26 to 30 lbs. We'll take em, these fish may get just a bit bigger in the days ahead !!!!!!!!!!!

HOLY **** That's all I have to say...... I tried the copper reel that I purchased from you several weeks ago along with the white spin doctor and hammer fly. I fished out of Lighthouse Marina this past weekend and killed the salmon. We went out to 120' let out all the copper and ***BAM*** lights out. The copper reel outfished 3 downriggers for 2 days. I'm ready to call Cannon and ask for a refund.....lol We caught 4 Kings that also were well over 20 pounds on this rig. Tom, the T100 & the green Inticer today (July 30/07) in 60 fow, 101 ft out on a #3 setting (smoked off 520 ft of wire). Didn't weigh it in the GOSD, I felt it wouldn't end up big enough by weeks end. She was bouncing 27 - 28 lbs. Skeiner......... Ontario, Canada

Fishing off Oswego continues to change as the Southerly winds persist. Most anglers are finding a home in the 375' to 500' depths. Some nice limits of healthy matures today for some and an average per boat of 5 to 10 Kings was the norm. Kings are scattered but higher in the water column than they have been all season so far. Cooler water temps. are confronting the shorter waters inside 200', look for the temperature breaks over 375' starting around 50 down first off in the am, then target that 60 to 75 down with your spreads of flies and spoons. No great "1" must have item setting the world on fire over any other choices, the Hammers and white attractors may be taking some precedence at times but the Kings are certainly coming on several different items for each we talk to. Finding the breaks in the right part of the water column over the right depths is key along with favorable down speeds and you will take Kings with the basic patterns that have been producing all season. These Kings off Oswego just keep entertaining anglers as the days go on, what a great season so far in 2007, some even saying it has been the best they've seen in many years or maybe ever. If we were to rank the top 3 presentations in order it would be wire divers #1, copper set-ups #2 and riggers last. Some have been able to keep the rigger action alive but many we talk to have had rather poor rigger results quite often.

One thing is for sure, Lake Ontario trollers sure are a competitive breed that aren't afraid to mix it up with fellow anglers to show their skills. We have limited info concerning this weekends Little Salmon River Challenge, but we did here a rumor that "Trout One" won the event. We also heard there was a staggering field of boats not that far off from the 100 mark ....WOW..... Unreal, this is great news, I also bumped into Ron Jacoby of "Beginners Luck" while I was on a tackle delivery just after the event and Ron said $800.00 was raised for the Net Pen projects. !!!!! SUPER !!!!! I am sure there will be much more info floating the web in the days ahead. Fishing was tough for many we did hear, I believe (un-o-fish-al) the total average weight of the top spot was just under 20 lbs. for 6 Kings. Same items working as the last few days but a few more spoons into the spreads mostly off the riggers, seems like keeping a few spoons in your spread will do you justice as of lately. Spoons with green and or glows, 28 sizes best. Dave at Fat Nancy's and Jon from Little Salmon River Tackle say they are selling a whole lot of Michigan Stingers in various colors, from the size of Jon's display I would tend to believe him, he has a bunch. The Glow Hammer continues to sell out at many shops, even out-selling our original Hammer this past week as well. It was the first week I can actually remember any item out-selling the Hammer since the later summer of 2006' !! Still not hearing much from the meat scene, there is a void being created with the lack of Rhys Davis cut strips this year, especially now that shops are sold out of last years left-over supply of Rhys, no great reports on the new bait being distributed, successes or of its quality ): Fish also remain a bit higher in the water column than that of the last few weeks, fish taken as high as 55 down in the am have been reported with the best average depth between 65 and 80 down the last few days.

Please keep in mind this is Harborfest weekend, Oswego is a madhouse !!! If you do not mind congestion than come-on up, I am not too sure how Wright's Landing works during this time, it would be a safe bet to just stay away and head to Mexico or Fair Haven if that is possible for you. I do know from about 3pm Saturday until Sunday am you can not drive North of Bridge Street (US Rt 104) Besides that commotion fishing remains good, just chatted with Andy Bliss off the Cold Steel and rods were moving. It was very, very, warm out and the lake was pristine flat, best temps. were found from 65 to 80 down. Wire divers out 175 to 205, riggers down 70 to 80 and coppers out 300 to 400 were all working with Stingray Stingers in Diehard, Glow Alewife and Gator. Andy mentioned the coppers and wires had attractor's and flies with white attractor's and the TG fly being best. Other mentions were the SuperCrazy Killer Combo (took 2 Kings off one wire out 205 on that rig) and a green chip/#23 fly w/chartreuse beads (21' to 23" fly leaders) It's safe to say get your favorite items on that you have the most faith in and keep em swimming, they will fire when you find active fish if your downspeeds are where they are suppose to be. (As of lately 2.1 to 2.3 on a Moore, or 2.3 to 2.5 on a Fish Hawk) With the way our currents have been lately out of Oswego surface speed hasn't meant a whole lot, its all about your downspeed, it will make you or break you.

Good luck to all fishing the Little Salmon River Challenge tomorrow out of Mexico, NY, with about 70 - 80 boats competing I would venture a guess it will take about 136 lbs. of Kings to win (6 Kings 22.66# average)

Hot out there today and not much of a ripple for the most part, just phoned Tommy from TK who is out helping Hat Trick for the pm trip. Tommy said they just boated a King but it wasn't hot-n-heavy to start the afternoon off. They fared well with many bites in the am trip with fish coming from 90 to 300 fow so their hopes were high. Items taking Kings today were NK Diehards and an NK in chartreuse/silver (both in 28 size) and also standard and glow hammers. 80 to 105 down off riggers, wire divers out 240 to 270, and coppers in 400 and 500 sections all generated bites. Not much bait to speak of today and not a ton of marks to work, but the Kings were biting none the less. Today was a day of low landing percentages, fleas that were really bad and uncomfortable humidity, but I am sure the fish will pick up even better as the afternoon progresses said Tommy. Good luck out there bud !!!!

A-TOM-MIK DEBUT

In the last few weeks we have noticed an increase in sales of our metal type dodgers, personally I have always preferred Luhr Jensen and Silver Horde type dodgers in their 8" models due to the fact they produced very well and we have used them for many, many, years. After coming out with our own style and influence into a metal dodger back in late 2003 and into 2004 we had created what was the start of a metal dodger following to our product. We sold good numbers of these until the strong influence of plastic rotators took over, with our added influence into the Spin Doctor and our working relationship with Dreamweaver we added the A-TOM-MIK Killer Combo's to our lineup over the winter/spring of 2007. We have sold just shy of 4000 units since January and currently can not keep these stocked at many tackle shops or on our online site. We ventured into this deal coming off a 2006 season and having ran some of these custom "spinnies" already knowing they were going to produce........... Well, we did things a bit different this time with our own metal dodgers, debuting a few color patterns that are totally new and un-proven, we will be adding 2 new colors imprinted on our "Trash Can" frosted dodger. We also work with Kelly and Cory at Silver Horde aka. Gold Star, who have been supporters to us for about 4 years now, so we put a call into them to get these painted up after seeing the metal dodgers start to move off the walls again at some local shops. A-TOM-MIK realizes plastic rotators can be the hottest items on earth considering great lakes Salmon tactics, but to add something new to your arsenal is always a great bet in this very trendy area of the Eastern Basin. Soon to hit a few shops in the Eastern Basin........A-TOM-MIK Trash Can style dodgers with blue and red stripes, from back in the days of the mid 80's and my early days on Lady O, the Kings have always liked stripes added to many baits !!! I remember the first NK to hit the wall at the Oswego Salmon Shop in the late 80's, it was a completely silver spoon, but with a green stripe !!!!! Oh was that item hot !!!!! Check em out, as hot as that green stripe has been for the NK way back when and for the original Silver Glo Jensen/green stripe only a few short years ago, why not these??? We will update the progress and success of this idea in the near future.

Blow off day, only one boat ventured out this am and not quite sure how they did, but it must have been bumpy, it has seemed to lay down some but never heard a word from an angler today.

8:pm

Fishing is still very good, after yesterdays blow it took the local captains just a bit to find out what happened to water temperatures and where the fish had moved to. Not far was the answer, if you went east the temps came up a bit (80 to 90 down was favorable) and if you headed west (105 to 115) was where the break was. After talking to several boats it seemed everyone was catching in short order after getting out this am. Coppers and wires were good (wire divers best) for some, while rigger bites were slow for most, (Coppers from 400's to 600's) (wires from 225 to 300) one helpful hint we gathered today was to limit your riggers to just one or 2 in the water at a time, seems you get more than 2 rigger cables and trolling weights moving around in the depths and it slows things up, especially once the morning bite starts to slow. As hard as it is for some anglers to pull all the riggers out of the water except for just 1 or 2, it seems it was paying off for those who chose to do so, maybe just on weekends when pressure is at its heaviest is something to keep in mind. Best lures today? We heard a few more spoons than we have been hearing about lately (all basics with Gander and Gator Stingers topping the list) but attractor/flies were still shining in several normal patterns. During sun/bright conditions chartreuse chips or SD's with B flies or plain Jane mirage flies have become staples, opting out the chartreuse blade for a chrome blade will also take Kings for you and is a good item to keep swimming at all times while the sun is shining. The standard go-to white chip or SD and the hammer is still simply outstanding, most locals are running glow hammers almost as much as the regular #T102 also. We didn't here as much green/green today as we normally do but I am sure if you run it the way the Kings are biting it will also pay dividends. Some metal dodgers are also being added into the equation more and more it seems, after stocking the shelves at Dave Woods and Fat Nancy's the last 2 days the metal dodgers have been taking a hit and getting bought up pretty good. Best colors there have been frog, chart/yellow (50/50), and the old stand by trash can patterns. I talked to Hat Trick and Tommy Germain while they both were fighting fish and also chatted with Andy Bliss off the Cold Steel after taking 8 straight fish (Kings and BT's) in short order. Things are happening anglers !!!! Now is the time to cash in on the bounties of Lady O out of O-Town !!!!

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

Our Eastern Basin sure can produce ample amounts of multiple species when she wants to !!! Seems like no matter who we talk to on any given day someone is taking a limit in short order or simply taking Kings and Browns during afternoon trips, late am trips, or whenever you decide to leave the dock. Fish are being taken on spoons, some meat, but mostly fly programs in various presentations. Depths of 100 to 250 fow are getting worked most, (East and West) thermoclines are moving around some but as of lately are down at 125 ft. You will mark 70 degrees down over 100 feet and no stiff break until you reach that 120+ mark. First thing in the am Kings are being taken in the warm water, but moving into their comfort zone as the morning passes, never pass up setting one line down in the ice, there is where many of the big Kings like to hang. Michigan Stingers in the most popular colors are working at times, diehards, NBK's, alewife, yellow killers and frog patterns all a safe bet. Attractors are hot in so many choices its hard to just name a few, basically if you get your downspeed right (2.2 to 2.5) and you find some active fish working bait you will have success. Some great set-ups are green/green's, white/pearl's, chrome/mirage and the dreaded white/Hammer combo, most anglers will not leave the dock without a Hammer combo rigged up and ready to rock, this item will perform for you without a doubt. On a side note we have received many upon many E mails on Kings taken dragging around broken off Hammer flies in their yap, not always just the Hammer fly either, attractors as well, why a King would hit another rig while dragging around an attractor/fly combo already is beyond me. On the Cold Steel we even took a 17 lb King that had a silver hammer fly, white PT, clear diver and 100 ft of SS wire, figure that one out, and the fish was taken over 180 fow 100 ft down ???? For some, rigger programs have been slow, stretches of 40 ft into the day may help at times, wires out 300, 330 and 350 as of lately and coppers in 400', 500' and 600' sections all having their day, always start off with a shorter section when you first set up in the am, 400 has been good for the first 2 hours the last few days while the un-tamed 600' section has taken its place throughout the day. If you have coppers that aren't taking bites do not be afraid to shorten up your leader to less than 25', even 15' will work for you. That's about it, fishing is stellar, Come get some !!!!

600' of our .037 copper, mid day conditions and of course the dreaded A-TOM-MIK Hammer is what it took to boat this King. The standard Model 130 Boga Grip wasn't big enough, the brass chatillon's had to be broken out. Hat Trick Charters' Jimmy and Kev-O had 2 couples aboard who all took part in fighting this king, a mount was in order as well.

As our Pro Staffer Scotty Richardson ("The Hammer") would say............... NICE !!!!!

Oswego fishing remains on fire, healthy limits of Kings for the captains on some days and Kings for almost every angler on a daily basis, mostly fly programs but a few spoons and even some meat taking fish as we get further into our season.

The largest Salmon in the Sodus Pro/Am was in the Pro division and was taken by The Port Bay Misfits weighing 28.15 lbs., the second largest Salmon was taken from the Am division by Chinook Hook weighing 27.52. Hank of L & M Charters from the Port Bay Misfits took the big king on our "Innovator" custom Spin Doctor rig. Hank has $100.00 cash and $200.00 worth of A-TOM-MIK product coming his way along with a nice plaque.

Team Liquid Plumber took the A-TOM-MIK big fish cup for the Lake Ontario Pro/Am with thier catch of a 28.63 lb. King on an A-TOM-MIK from the Oswego event, Del Casterline caught the biggest King from the 4 Pro/Am's and also took the largest LOC Salmon landing $7500.00 for the big catch.

Team Screamer / A-TOM-MIK won the coveted Lake Ontario Pro/Am cup over-all "again" for the Am's, this team is one tough team to top, Dave and Joe pose with a couple Kings after placing 2nd at Sodus, all of which helped with the over-all win. Copper set-ups, Sharks, A-TOM-MIK's, some new custom Spin Doctors and talent to put it all together was what it took, Big Fin Gene and Gene also teamed up with Screamer for this leg of the event, the Big Fin fly did it's part as usual claimed young Gene!!

Team Cold Steel / A-TOM-MIK took 2nd for the over-all Lake Ontario Challenge Cup Pro, we fought hard but fell a bit short for the over-all behind Top Gun of Oswego. We also placed 5th at Sodus, a late last minute rally boxing 4 fish in the last 45 minutes helped us out after a very tough 2nd day. We wanted that "Lake Cup" bad but we are pleased with our finish, !!!!!!!!!! NEXT YEAR !!!!!!!!! Thanks to Shark, Fat Nancy's, Regal Vise and those A-TOM-MIK flies !!! To Captain's Tom and Andy from myself: It was a pleasure, we look forward to next season's tourney atmosphere and partying tactics aboard the *Cold Steel* boat

Fishing is great, almost every boat I talk to on any given day has a story to share. Salmon and Brown Trout are there for the taking, from East to West, short water to 300+ ft. on some days, they just seem to be everywhere. Some anglers have some hot spoons like the Die-hards, NBK's, and Alewife spoons working, while others have their fly programs working flawlessly and wouldn't consider a spoon program. Stay versatile anglers, be willing to experiment at times but never forget the basics or your go-to's. If your chasing the Kings, best temps have been down 70 to 90 feet, overcast days or first thing in the am keep your stretch off the riggers from 10 to 15 ft. (Distance between trolling weight and lure/attractor), high sun or mid day stretch em out to 20 to 30 ft. Wire divers out 210 to 270 have been hot and producing best out of the many choices of presentations available. Coppers are definitely worth the effort it takes to master them, in the last 5 to 7 days while I have been on the water, sections from 350 to 600 have all taken fish, with 400 taking the biggest share of fish. While some will shy away from these new concepts the seasoned anglers will continue to dial it in, many of the top names have contacted us more than ever for copper set-ups and related items, the shops are selling this stuff like mad. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out when the big names in the business are dialing something in there is a reason........... Copper Rules for big fish and added fish and is a stealthy concept. We have sold 205,000 ft of .037 copper this season alone and over 70 copper reels (Penn's, Okuma's and Shimano Tekota's) to the Eastern Basin and on the internet, the stuff is hot !!!

We apologize for limited reports again this week, we will be involved in the last leg of the Pro/Ams in Sodus Point, chasing that coveted cup our goal, wish us a bit of luck and we will be wishing all the best to the many of you who are involved and competing.

2007 Oswego Pro/Am Spread Sheet

Oswego anglers remain successful even as the days pass with adverse conditions at times. Some boats are doing better than others but most seem to be putting fish in the cooler, from hefty BT's to silvery Salmon and the occasional Bow and Laker, seems you just have to put your time in to get the rods moving. All the basic goodies in the staple colors are a great choice, "Keep it simple S........" is the way to go.

Here is a cell-phone shot of Shane Zimmerman with the leading 27#, 5oz. Nook, sure is a nice fish and a great feeling to be holding. Nice !!!!! I talked to Shane's dad Lester yesterday am about his catch and asked him if I could get him any favorite items of ours for the added recognition we will receive from this Grand Prize placing fish, Lester hesitated for a minute and says "Tom, we already have it all", Shane was in the back ground and said ask for a hat or a shirt........... Well, I'll tell you what folks, with gentlemen like this following our product to that degree that they can't even ask for a freebie or 2, geeez. All I can say is Shane has one hell of a roll model as a dad.

We would also like to congratulate "REELJERKS" Mark and William Caperton for their current 3rd place #25.06 King taken on an A-TOM-MIK 3-FLY-RIG out of Rochester. Another nice King and fish to be proud of for sure !!!

Rich D also took a King yesterday only ozs. shy of the board on one of our Twinkie style rigs and a Savant spoon. Nice fish Rich D.

First Oswego Pro/Am pre-fish trip tomorrow, oh man does the Cold Steel team live for these events, what a rush to compete amongst the many of anglers who share the same interests.

Word has it our Stinger Hammer Spoon is a very popular item in all the Eastern Basin Tackle shops, most have since sold out after our 3rd distributed order to the local shops, (over 700 have been produced to date) we apologize if you didn't get any. Michigan Stinger will now take over with getting these spoons to thier distribution and to thier direct accounts for continued sales, thanks for the heavy support on that (: (: (: !!!!

Lots of wind this weekend but didn't scare off the die-hards, Salmon were taken but numbers were down due to the water temps moving around. Still some hefty Salmon taken each day however, our reports may not be all that informative this week due to our participation in the Oswego Pro/Am this coming weekend. With the plentiful BT still around a big portion of the field may just be targeting them, chasing the Salmon is a harder gig especially when you have to put 2 good days together. Best of luck to all throughout this week of pre-fish.

Congratulations to Shane Zimmerman aboard the "Zip-N-Zim" for his current Grand Prize leading LOC Salmon. Shane was fishing with his dad Lester out of Fair Haven in 175 fow when the hefty King fell for a braid diver loaded with a blue glow Spin Doctor and our clear (tint) pearl #011 LBB Fly. What a fish it was, Lester is pictured on our home page with Team Screamer after thier presentation at Sodus for the "2006 Lake Ontario Cup" trophy am division. I bet Shane and Lester are feeling pretty good right about now, nice job !!!!!!!!!!
Today saw several lunkers entered in the LOC as we earlier predicted with 2 other 25 lb. Kings so far this weekend. Without a doubt thier are more larger Kings filtering into our Eastern Basin as the days pass, we have received a dozen E mails and calls saying anglers weighed in a LOC fish only ozs. shy of the Board. Captain Ace of Ace Charters also weighed in a nice Salmon today only to be bumped in short order with larger Kings. Flies are working pretty good for many anglers, thanks for the E mails and testimonials, we appreciate you running our products.
Best of luck to the "Zip-N-Zim, Team Screamer and the rest of us are wishing you luck !!!!

Pretty good start to the morning, a better class of Salmon may have moved in after yesterdays blow, didn't really get any hard info to share but it seemed like all the normal go-to's were working, attractor/flies being the way to go for the Kings. Most boats were BT fishing however, only a few targeting the Salmon first thing this am, those who were had a good pick going. I have a feeling the LOC board will be making a move again this weekend just as predicted last week, let's see what happens........... Hat Trick was fighting a double at 8am on big guys!! We may not get another chance to update again today, best of luck this weekend.

Still plenty of action in front of Oswego !!!!!! Very nice Brown Trout mixed in with Salmon east and west of the shute. Target waters range from 90 to 300 ft, strong concentrations of bait seem to be hanging on the shallower side of these numbers. Brown Trout are taking spoons from 65 to 90 down, Stingers, NK's and Dreamweaver slims in alewifes, frog patterns, diehards and Gators. The Salmon are below the BT's from 90 to 110 ft, they are taking some spoons but most anglers are sticking to their fly programs when trying to target Kings. Today there was a major break around 90 ft, 85 down was 57 degrees, 95 ft down was 48. Basic fly patterns/combos are the way to go, green/green, white/white, or chartreuse/TG, the biggest factors are staying on top of the Kings and maintaining proper down speeds, the Kings are favoring 2.2 to 2.6, if you get slower the BT's will keep your rods moving and if you get too deep their are some lunker Lakers around that aren't that much fun dragging in on 4 to 500 ft of copper, nice fish but a chore to land. All in all good fishing to be had, still no great numbers of Kings but to get out on the big pond and land a lunker or two is all so worth it !!! Copper sections of 400 to 500 ft have shined in the last few days, even out-producing wire's, we went 6 solid hours without a wire firing a few days ago, ouch !! This while our 2 coppers took 8 bites. Today was hotter than h----, we each lost a few pounds dodging the sun this am. Copper still was very good, wire was better than it has been and the riggers were ok too. Best of luck, fish to be had, C'mon up before Mother Nature turns the fans on and changes things up !!!

Fishing off Oswego is brightening up, the BT continue to be sought after as the Kings are starting to become part of the equation. BT action in the last few days has been over 80 to 110 fow and right dead nuts on the bottom in 59 to 62 degree water. Michigan Stinger Spoons in regular and stingrays being mentioned on a regular basis for those chasing the square tails. The King guys however are favoring attractor/flies and lucky for us the "Atomic" brand are quite popular among the King chasers. (Nice spelling on our name huh, Atomic, lol) Hey we will take it, spell it any way you wish !!!!!!!!!! He He He Best combos have been white SD or PT and green flies (#23, #41, #106) or the SD/HammerTime rig, also green on greens and Mtn dew/"Big Fin" flies. (aka. Innovator rig) Cold Steel had another 23# yesterday and Geoff Hoover from Ontario Canada had biggest King of the summer Scotty at 28.70 on our new Pro/Am fly. We have received about a dozen E Mails and phone calls in the last week alone from anglers and Pro Staff who feel our new rattles embedded into our Tourney Series Flies are the reason for our flies success as of lately, we certainly hope so. Kings are being taken from the Salmon River to Sodus in 120 to 300 fow, be aware however there are many areas where you may troll for miles with no fish, Salmon are spread out throughout the Eastern Basin, no great concentrations. Average boat taking 1 to 4 adult Salmon if you choose to target them directly for a 4 to 6 hr "morning fish" these aren't any great King numbers but it is yet another start for the big sharks to show their presents, with the few Lake Trout and Rainbows mixed in as well as the outstanding BT fishery things are certainly materializing. Keep moving is the key, and work your rigs from 75 to 125 ft down (At present) Check out the LOC board after last night, 10 Salmon out of 20 on Atomic flies, I Honestly thought I would be thrown into an SVT attack after getting off the water yesterday.........

Updated 11:am

Rough day today, 3 to 5 footers out of the North at present and building, 4 to 5 charters out getting bumped around but action for all none the less. The consistent BT show still alive and great to look forward to, the temps have moved down to 85 to 90 ft and that is where the fish are, much bait present and just a couple more Kings as well in the mix. Cold Steel did the BT's for a while this am but had clientele that wanted to venture off for some big guys. Tom and Andy obliged knowing there have been a few Kings around and were happy to change up tactics and see how they could fair on the silvers. Only minutes into changing up mostly spoon presentations to attractors/flies and it was "Fish-On"............. First King came 270 on the wire attractor/fly, green/green, a nice 23# to start things off, no derby tickets from the clientele but silver in the cooler to add to the BT box!!! Longer into the search yielded more hooked-up fish, 95 down over 130 fow, also including a teenager and another big guy, but a case of the dropsies due to mostly foul weather, a bite-off and one that ran under the boat after playing "net me" at the swim platform. White spinnies/hammer and also the same green chip/#23 fly. So, all in all action to be had for BT and a King or 2, nothing hot-n-heavy but if this is a start to the Salmon out of Oswego then we will certainly take it. With the Cold Steel in search mode I would be eagerly confident with Kings in the vicinity, there will be nets and scales flying !!!! I am not sure what the weatherman has planned for us for this weekend but if you decide to fish Oswego tread on the safe side for Lady-O will not discriminate. Good luck this weekend my friends........

Fishing remains very good on many fronts, from the river system here in Oswego to the big lake out front of O-Town things are simply good. Day after day the big lake guys continue to share stories about how many Browns have been caught or how fast limits have been taken. One day the BT seem to be on top over 40 fow and the next they are on bottom in 60 fow, but always there for the taking after you figure them out, certainly no way of targeting them in the exact same scenario each day unless conditions remain stable, and that's a lot to hope for in our Eastern Basin. The fact is they are around and willing to play our game once sought after in their desired areas of the lake. Watch for bait on the graph and keep in mind North-easterly to South-easterly winds drive cold waters in, fish will move up in the water column as easterly winds persist. Best baits this week have been spoons in natural colors during light, and glows and greens during darker days or lower light, even a few body baits like Smithwicks still working up top when the surface is broken up from wind or when the cooler temps are more near shore (20 to 40 fow), black/silver's being the best then if you are into the clear waters like me normally have.
Off shore does have fish and there are Salmon around, one major problem with any great info is a lack of fisherman off-shore to report to us, keeping clients happy with many moving rods is a tough gig to break-away from for the captains who are regularly frequenting the BT waters. Occasionally a charter will head off shore for the last hour of a trip or to break the monotony of the constant BT action and will take a King or Steelie for their trouble, attractors and flies in standard patterns are working as well as some of the same preferred spoons that they chase the BT with. The hammer fly and crinkle greens and the NBK Stingers and alewives have all been mentioned in the last few days.

On another note our A-TOM-MIK web-site hit the 100,000 mark, this took us just over 4 years to accomplish, when we had our site built 4 years ago I honestly never thought we would reach the numbers of anglers we reach now days. Thanks to everyone who has followed us from the start, we sure do like the involvement from the many who share our same interests !!!

The LOC board continues to grow with larger Lake Ontario Brown Trout by the day, the Oswego river system is very alive and vibrant with more Sheepshead on stringers than I ever care to personally witness again, and the night-time Walleye chasers are smiling ear to ear with a good selection of Eye's for their effort. Oswego just seems to be a great place to hone the skills that many of us live for on a seasonal basis. Even a few Kings around for the taking in the big water when your willing to commit to targeting them and sticking with your game-plan.
Sea Devil Brian, Big Fin Gene & Gene along with Joe from Screamer all stuck it out this past weekend with a LOC placing King in mind. Feeling very rewarded and pleased after showing their skills to Lady-O they ended the weekend with a mixed bag of steelie's, skippers, teenagers and some nice adults, the largest pulling the glass chatillion's to #19.15, yep, just 1 lil oz. short of their goal for that LOC online derby board. I'll sum it up for them............ DAM-IT !!!!! lol............ A combination of "Die-Hard Jeff"s' favorite spoon and a new flavored Spinnie along with a few other staples from the fly scene, crinkle green #23's, whites, green/silvers etc. is what it took to show the weekend warriors they are still some of the best "King/fly guys" in the business. Waters worked over the weekend ranged from 60 to 100+' and from West 9 mile to the front door, bait was moving around all weekend as well as the water temps. within the water columns. The mixed bag of Kings and Steelhead were taken from various areas of the water columns including the ice and some in the top 40 ft. Kings were taken from 42 to 55 degrees. Persistence, Persistence, Persistence, there were also a few Kings that "would have weighed" quoted young Gene, but they managed to elude us, some definite Kings around weighing at minimum in the twenty's, ripping copper sections and wire lines up like dental floss when hooked-up. (Also heard Terry House of "The More Marvelous" vessel took some adults as well on spoons and our flies, Terry is no stranger to provoking Kings)......... There ya have it, Kings can be taken if you choose to commit, chances are the BT guys will continue to pound the BT's throughout the remainder of this week until a few weekend warriors come back into O-Town to stir the pot again and mess with the big guns of Lake Ontario, The King's of the lake, ole Mr. Nook !!!!!!!

Past Derby winning fish, Check it out 43.09 & 43.14 were the largest......... Unreal ......... Even our hero Vince Pierleoni was in there some 25 years ago taking the hogs........

Some North winds today changed things up a bit for the BT guys in Oswego, the fish were a bit deeper this am (deeper in the water column and also deeper in the lake) but none the less still eager to liven up the crews and to keeps rods a poppin. I will not go into details I am starting to sound like a broken record, Oswego has a Brown Trout fishery............ C'mon up, there may be a few anglers chasin the Silvers but we have not heard from them. I do keep hearing from some locals that we have "Salmon out there" just nobody targeting them all that often, there was a placing LOC Salmon out of Sodus this am as well. James Abel from Abe's Tackle Box in Sodus said yesterday there have been some regular catches of Salmon in the last few days, guess he was right after one was brought to the scales a day after his info.
Walleye fishing in the Oswego River remains good, a buddy took 2 last night across from the grate, under Utica on the West side, both Walleye hit black/silver #13 floating husky straight Rapalas, he was tying in a swivel 2 ft above the lure to catch some of the debris floating down the river, water flow was low, he fished for 2 hours and missed 2 other fish. The daytime worm drifters are still picking away each day, we see Bass, Sheepers and Eye's everyday from Coleman's to the railroad bridge.
A-TOM-MIK Pro Staffer Geoff Hoover from the Wild Reels charter service has been sending us photos like mad all this week, many Kings taken regularly out of Port Dalhousie, Wild Reels Sport Fishing won the Youth Entrepreneurship Award and Small Business of the year in his area! Great job Geoff keep them flies working for us. Image Geoffs dad with his largest Salmon ever yesterday on his 50th birthday, nice King taken on an A-TOM-MIK Aqua Hammer (SSS Exclusive product)

BTW 37 guesses for the size of the BT from yesterday ranging from 9.5 lbs. to 23 lbs., this BT pulled the Boga to #12.5, the closest 2 guesses were 13.8 and 13.9

Brown Trout, Brown Trout, Brown Trout and even more Brown Trout, 5 captains out this am all back to the dock with limits of BT's, no real favorite items, no real favorite presentations, a 200 ft. .037 copper section did seem to be picked on a fair share today over 55 fow., from top to bottom in 15 to 60 fow west of shute saw many fish today. Michigan Stingers, Dreamweaver spoons, Smithwicks, even BT's on the odd attractor/fly being ran for the silvers all managed fish. No captains that we know of ventured off shore for very long, too much short water action, staying in tighter was what went on today. The Hammer Spoon as well as every thing else in your box will work when you happen across a feeding frenzy of hungry, healthy, rather fat-looking, football BT's !!!!!!!!!!!
And there are very big, big, big, big'ns as well like this Lake Ontario Lunker.................

Great morning to start the day off, Hat Trick took 8 BT's and and 8 lb. Walleye in short order this am (before 7:30) (20 to 40 fow fishing down 10 to 30 ft, all Michigan Stingers) before they headed off shore to mix things up some, Kevin had 5 rips already in the deeper water from 120 to 200 ft, 120 to 160 being best. One free slider was working well off a rigger set 50 feet down, (a nice 10+ lb. BT in there as well) another diver out 180 (2 1/2) had went twice (both these positions had a new item working, stay tuned for photo's to come later today for this new lure with fish attached (: ) A nice King also came off a chrome chip/mirage fly out 300' on the copper and a big board. This was just a start of the morning trip after a troll from the short water out to 200 ft and back west of shute. Kevin had rods moving and had to let me go asap. Will try to get a picture of the new item later today that was working pretty well !!!! :) :)

UPDATE
Here is the debut of the Michigan Stinger Stingray Hammer, in all honesty we ran this spoon while at Niagara for a week and couldn't turn a fish in Niagara green water, this with giving it a very fair shake, but as it debuted today in the gin clear water off O-Town it fired very well, nothing big but action none the less, Kev-O performed the debut, nice job bud !! These will hit Eastern Basin stores as soon as tomorrow !! Available in a smooth finish and hammered

Another banner day today followed by a banner weekend. Oswego is shaping up somewhat in the big picture, lets hope it continues to progress as expected. Just a quick note on the river system...........the Walleye continue to bite throughout the day and night, #18 Rapala's at night and worms and brown jigs by day, sheephead are filling coolers as well for those pursuing them, we see much activity each day on our walk along Linear Parkway on the west side...........
Now for the lake news, the Brown trout continue to fill limits for the captains, 20 to 50 fow fishing down 10 to 30 ft, mostly to the west but not limited to, natural colored spoons in daylight and spoons with any amount of white in them during low-light conditions. Off-shore there are Kings being taken, still no great numbers but Kings are Kings and we will taken what we can get after a rather slow Oswego May King fishery. This weekend saw weigh-able Kings for the LOC, the Big Fin crew aboard Sea Devil could have placed a 21+ lbr. if they had known it would have been big enough for the derby, guys like Big Fin Gene and Brian Castle just figured they weren't big enough, they certainly haven't been following the late results, oh well Gene said, "Give me that same chance this coming weekend and watch the board !!!" Well, Gene you are on, now you know and we will be watching the LOC board !!! Troy Creasy from High Adventure had Kings, Cold Steel had a King or 2, and several other boats all had boated a King this weekend, that is great news !! The bait has moved off shore, the temp.'s have started to set up (46 degrees down 90), over 100 fow and what seems to be the start of a few Kings off Oswego is coming together while heavy interest is floating around in this news alone. As more anglers start to target our Kings more info will filter into the system so we can get things started for 07'.
As for what the favored items were, here is some of the info we gathered, all took Kings:
400', .037 copper, otter boat, chrome Spin Doctor/#22 fly (2 bites)
400', .037 copper, shute rod, chrome chip/#97 fly
270'-290' wire divers, white Pro Troll and a TG Fly & #23 fly (several bites)
Michigan Stinger Stingray NBK down 90 back 15
Michigan Stinger Alewife/glow back/down 95 back 15
Best speeds were 2.4 at the ball, 44 to 46 degress down 90 to 95' over 100 fow, west of shute

Fishing remains good for Brown Trout, limit catches are available any day. Most boats are within 3 mile creek to the west and 9 mile point to the east, 20 to 60 fow has been best. Riggers mostly ran from 10 to 30 down depending on light conditions. Standard Michigan Stinger spoons in alewife, NBK or frog patterns and NK's in diehard in size 28 have all been producing, darker days run darker lures.
The off-shore gig just hasn't happened so-to-say yet this season on a consistent level, however there is action off-shore just not the King action we were all hoping and expecting after our tremendous run-off from the extreme accumulated snow-fall of late winter. For the local captains and rec's who have been faithfully giving it a go off-sh
