May 23 - May 25 2009 Big Fin Gene aboard the "Her Money" and "Sea Devil" vessels out of Oswego, NY. Out of over 40 kings landed 8 came on spoons the rest on flies........ Great job guys !!! Brian Castle, Jeff Hunter, Captain Dan and the copper/fly guru himself young Gene Delicati............ Best items over the weekend were green chips and #23 and #41 flies and also a white chip and #132 fly. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Monday July 11, 2011
Fishing in Oswego remains off the charts, truly unreal fishing for everyone. The focus is targeting the Kings with secondary efforts for chasing the BT's that are literally stacked up in 70 to 90 fow. For Kings you have several options, for numbers try the 200+ fow range and target the top of the break (57 degrees and down from there) these are mostly juveniles from 6 to 15 lbs. For matures target the 125 to 165 fow range and fish the colder water from 53 to 46 degrees. Hot combos lately are blue bubble chips and spinnies with various hammer flies and chrome or mtn dew colored attractors when bright out with B-flies or various mirage patterns. The BT's are taking mostly stingers and do not be afraid to run stingrays, hot patterns are still tuxedo white back when over cast or early then mongoose or alewife/silver patterns when bright. Speed for Kings has been crucial, FH speed from 2.4 to 2.7 and Moore speed from 2.0 to 2.3, each day can be different. All in all fishing is fabulous, best we have had in 4 seasons. Monday July 4, 2011
That short window of opportunity all of us big lake guys wait each season for is upon us out of O-Town. The babies have come home, barring any severe weather, King fishing could maintain for a while. Catches from a few per boat to 30 bites have been reported all weekend, anglers running east and west and out the front door all having some success !!! 80 fow to 300 fow and anywhere in-between at any given time yielding Kings in the 10 to 30 lb. range. Big Fin Gene had his green attractors and 41's going, Prime Time Pete same deal. Wire divers from 225 early to 300 later morning or into the day. Ace Charters with his 110X Ace flies putting an easy dozen Kings in the box for his clients off his 500 and 600 coppers. There is a sharp break moving around, at times it is 55 degrees down 80 ft then dropping to 47 with just a subtle speed change. Porky on the "All-Out" had a chrome chip with a shredded hammer going steady for a half dozen big guys offa 270 diver mid day yesterday. I talked with a dozen guys and each had their favorite go-to's firing, Top Gun quoted "There hitting everything Tom"............... I Guess its time for you to be here !!!! Monday June 27, 2011
Oswego staying heated up for all chasing Brown Trout, thanks to all who participated in the 2011 3rd Annual A-TOM-MIK Challenge, 70 teams showed and a great time was had by all. Congratulations to Team LATERON for their win, they had a tourney limit of 6 fish which consisted of all Browns and an average weigth of 11 lbs per fish WOW !! Browns are growing faster than ever with the great amount of bait being seen daily, there are a few Kings around like the 26.5 lb. fish taken by Team Horsin' Around this past weekend, no normal amount of Kings taken daily still but I feel any day they could show, just can't wait !! The Browns have been taken from the shoreline to 100 fow, and from top to bottom, all dependant upon teh conditions and weather trends of days past. The BT's have been favoring Michigan Stinger spoons but just about all presentations and baits will work Friday June 17, 2011
The long-time good BT fishing taking a hit as of late, still good catches around but a few boats struggling with the transitioning fish right now. Still to the east and west boats are targeting our Brown's, one day the boats go one way and the next they go the other. The best depths seem to be over 30 to 40 fow, it has seemed to warm up inside there a bit too much for taking more than a fish here or there. There are a few spoons getting bit on a regular basis but the last few days when you "happen" across some aggressive BT's it no longer matters as they will hit almost anything. The better colors seem to be greens with silver or crush clear tapes while bright and white back spoons with green while over-cast or early. The occasional rainbow still being taken and yesterday there were very aggressive Lakers over 500 fow that were in the top 40 ft that were not shy. Kings are slow but the odd King is still showing itself. Tuesday June 14, 2011
Blew today, hard Northeast, prolly gonna be icey in the morn', will let you know I will be out Monday June 13, 2011
Back to a touch of reality this past weekend, for the most part however there were fish to be taken by all, but the "easy limits" weren't the case due to "pressure" and "transition". It made for some tough fishing periodically through the weekend for most. The "Green Can" area saw 20+ boats the last few mornings and most only managed a slow pick, others off the plant took about the same. The King fishing was also very slow to nonexistent, a few skippers around for those chasing Kings and the lone adult for just a few anglers. On a better note the mother-load of bait has moved into Oswego, from 40 fow to 225 fow saw more bait than I recall in many years. In some cases from top to bottom and on your screen almost always. Fly presentations seemed best from those few I heard caught. Same go-to items green/green and white/hammer. Some incidental BT's are also coming over deep water at times and I had to take 10 incidental Lakers the last several trips out. Many spoons working, green glows early, black silvers in the sun. All fish coming from top to bottom, whether chasing Kings of BT's. I took a day off to check on a few perch spots up North and hear the perch are pretty easy in many spots around Cherry Island and the normal places, we managed 90 lbs. in a morning with 3 guys and even took a whitefish. Looks as if the perch are chasing the same bait the Kings are, for those that know me looks like I found the reltaionship that keeps me chasing Kings and Perch ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Friday June 10, 2011
Fishing remains steady, the green can area is giving up BT's daily, super slims in lemon lime and green or blue dolphin the top producers. Still a few Kings but few and far between, then again not many are fishing them, some spoons and some flies working, normal stuff like diehards and green/green or white/hammer. Work the bottom around the bait in 90 to 175 fow, other species being taken as well, some nice Lakers and various size Rainbows. As of now winds are expected to pick up starting Saturday late day. Tuesday June 7, 2011
Unbelievable weather has not stopped the action out of O-Town !! Browns are truly "to die for" with 10 to 30 bites per day most days for the guys that know the routine, in tight first thing to 20 to 50 fow after initial light. Rainbows or Steelhead are available in the top 15 to 50 ft of the water column over 80 to 200 fow as of the last few weeks. For the Bows' try 3 to 8 colors of lead, slide divers or weighted flatlines with bright colored spoons like oranges and reds. Incidental Lakers (unless targeting them) mixed with the BT's and Bows' and occasional Atlantic's as well as Kings all available daily. No great amount of Kings per say, but from Skippy's to teenagers, to a few adults have all been common lately. For the Kings try a few stingray spoons with green and black or w/glow, or attractor/fly combo's like the Captain Valium rig in the sun, green/green and white/white or simply the hottest attractor/fly combo ever to hit Lady O - a white attractor and a HAMMER-FLY !! Yeah I know that's a pretty bold statement but from my travels *around the majority of ports on the lake* that combo or variations of that combo have been killing Kings like NK's and Meat did for an amazing amount of years !! Trust it (See Image) He He He, also added a few shots of our awesome green water we have right now, the bait is stacked in certain areas and may possibly be more bait than I have seen in many years, we just need the big toothy critters to get here. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Monday June 6, 2011
Oswego has to be the best it has ever been for consistency and quality Brownt Trout action. East or West everyday, in tight or 20 to 60 fow, up top or 20 to 30 down at times, it just does not get any better, I left the dock late and quit early with my son and his 2 friends and got to rotate through the 3 of them repeatedly. There is also some King action taking place at a slow pace but more and more by the week are showing up and being caught. Kings have been taken all over, no rhythm or reason, from the front door and west mostly, from 80 fow to a few hundred feet, the few anglers who are in search mode are getting a few. "Out for Trout" John said he has taken 6 (up to 19 lbs.) in his last 3 trips out. Flies and spoons both working, one problem I found on my last trip off shore is surface temp. is about the same from top to bottom in many areas. Makes for tough targeting any certain area of the water column. The thermo bars will set up in the weeks ahead and will tighten up them temps for us. Just a note on the 2011 Skip Hartman event this past weekend, over 13,000 lbs. of mostly Kings taken and over 900 fish brought to the scales, this is a record from the 2nd highest weight taken when our Cold Steel/A-TOM-MIK Team won the 2008 Skip Hartman event in 2008. (9200 lbs.) Leaves for better days ahead of us when these fish migrate our way come fall. I feel the reason these "Mega-Pounds" were taken is due to the fact we had 6 weeks of a late starter to the season and vulnerable non-King like weather from dominant easterly winds. Once the sun, moon and starts lined up (so to say) like they have recently, left for an ultimate blood bath of Kings taken. Tuesday May 31, 2011
Felt the urge to target Kings again this am so off we went setting up outside BT land in 60 fow to the east. Marked no bait and only one possible King all the way to 225 fow off 9 mile east, plenty of LT's on the bottom in their normal depth. We dropped a few rigs down there for only 30 minutes just to check on the size and grabbed 2 almost instantly 16 to 19". We turned back and slid in a bit shallower hoping the other direction might trigger a better response, no luck. After 3 hours figured we'd bail and try to save face chasing a few BT's in some deeper water, one small fish came off a 3 color core and another bruiser hit a 90' wire diver weighing in at over 14 lbs. It wiggled upright across my deck like Shamu, had to se it to believe it !! A few missed short strikes and one last Atlantic found its way to my slip dispy (as young gene calls them) over 75 fow. (back 20 out 72) No Kings like we had hoped for but saved the day with a few fish and the largest BT aboard the Crazy B*tch this season. The last image was 50 yards of my dock, only time I ever thought I just might need an actual way-point to find my way to my dock, lol Fog never gave up one bit today, visibility very limited. Only a few boats out today but did very well chasing BT's they said !!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Monday May 30, 2011
Well the weather we dream about is here and it's been here for a few days and it also looks as though it will be sticking around a bit longer. The flat seas and high sun at times leave us just as vulnerable as the inclement conditions can, but hey at least it's easier to endure !!! I ventured off-shore for the first time just to take a look yesterday, I wanted to see where the temps were and what I could find for bait and marks. I was a bit disappointed in the amount of bait around but at least I found some nice marks. I set up in 60 degree surface water 330 degree out of the shute in 120 fow, I heard of some Steelie action in the 80 to 100 fow range so I wanted to get past that as not be sucked in by steelie action ...... I wanted Kings !!! The first rigger fired in 225 fow, green chip / #41 fly off my shute 59' rigger. A feisty chrome 14 lb. King.. Wow that seemed easy only within an hour or so out. I turned back and went through the spot once again, no marks and no more rods moving. I was chatting with Big Fin/Sea Devil as they had the same initial game plan but they had colder temps west of where I was. Our next rod fired off a 44 rigger Hammertime spinnie/shredded hammer fly in about 425 fow, ...steelhead, the fish jumped about he same time the rigger went off. As we looked around we found nice marks all in the top 50 fow, mostly steelhead I figured until a slide diver fired with King #2. GREAT !!! There were Kings around, we turned back after hitting 525 fow for another hour or so with only 1 more small fish, but hey I saw what I wanted to see so we ran in. I had my dad out also 2 days ago just for 2 hours east of harbor, the BT action is around if you play your cards right, not the best lately with high sun though. My dad took a handful of BT's up to 8 and 9 lbs. with the usual 3 to 5 lbers as well. Spoons off shallow riggers or off boards with small weights, first am they are pretty easy to capture with more larger fish showing up by the week. Today we only did a couple hours as it was so nice a few little guys just had to get out for a bit, Damien and Jameson had great patience for a couple hours. Not the usual action in the high sun but a very nice 11.2 BT for their trouble, fish hit a mongoose stinger off a 16ft rigger over 35 fow. Nice BT's around and a few Silvers to boot, stories of better catches around here and there on silvers. You just need to put your time in !! Here is one last shot of the silver action that is going on near the other side of the lake, where the water is green and the Kings can be "to dream about" !! Mostly spoon action up until this shot, flies are soon becoming very popular. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Monday May 23, 2011
Broken record report once again, BT action nothing less than consistent in O-Town. I am sure in the days ahead a few will venture off shore to search for other forms of action. I have heard a few reports of such already with very limited action on Kings, still the incidental being taken but the BT action remains the draw. I fished the last 3 days leading up to Jon's Little Salmon River BT derby which saw dense patches of fog that swallowed all boats. Congrats to Pete and crew "On The Lamb" for taking the win, our A-TOM-MIK Team which consisted of my cousin and his wife grabbed the 4th place spot from 45 boats. Our success was hitting deeper waters and fishing deeper with larger baits, 20 to 35 fow and 15 to 20 down at times. In all honesty the BT's are simply a fun fish to target and are being taken out of Oswego from as far west as 9 mile creek and to the east as far as the plant. Fishing with sticks or spoons gets the job done off longlines or riggers. Here are a few of the bigger BT's we took in the last 3 days in the 7 to 10 lb range, and 1 rather large sheepshead by yours truely ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tuesday May 17, 2011
Fishing remains super, Browns seem to be getting bigger on average as well as more 3 year olds showing up daily. Mixed reports of Kings coming in from east and west ports on a somewhat bi-daily average. Weather is a constant factor with cold, wind and rain that goes away for short periods then comes back for week long stretches. Somewhat of an odd year with great fishing, odd weather and later than seasonal weather trends. I guess it makes it that much sweeter when you can get out. Some rec anglers local captains are taking browns in excess of 10 lbs almost every trip out. Many baits are working, if your a DW fan run DW, if your a Stinger fan run Stingers, if you like to run plugs the BT's will be sure to smash them for you. From in tight to 40 fow you should have no problem hooking up with these fat football BT's !! Saturday May 07, 2011
Oswego Brown Trout fishing is simply awesome, limit catches normal every day, even a current break in the weather is very rewarding. To the east and west dependant upon stained water and conditions are giving up some of the best catches in many years !!! I ventured out yesterday with hopes of putting a fish on the LOC board, we fished east and a bit deeper than the pack (25 to 60 fow) and stayed there figuring a few bigger fish would be pushed out to deeper depths, luckily enough the stained water reached outside the shallow's of the shoreline as well. We hooked up just 1 King on a DW moon-cricket that jumped about 20 ft behind the boat and came un-glued. Also took 3 year old BT's to about 10 lbs. and a jumbo Laker probably pushing the 14 lb. mark. But no derby fish for my cousin Eric and I. Fishing remains awesome, Kings mentioned from both Mexico and Fair Haven on occasion along with good BT fishing as well. Sunday April 24, 2011
Fishing remains steady in O-Town, despite conditions, freezing temp's one day, 40 mph winds the next, torrential downpours the day after that. Not a lot of breaks given for more than a partial trip or so concerning weather. However for those out weathering the storm, the rewards have been pretty consistent !! Sticks the norm off boards, or shallow spoons off riggers. Most of the action has been to the east but I ran west yesterday just to try it and we found fish there as well off 3 mile. Still looking like a great start to the spring with a mix bag of fish for all. Sunday April 17, 2011
.....and the weather is back for another shot at the title, not sure why she feels the need for so many title-defenses but she sure does, she started last season early and never gave up, from Dalhousie to Dalhousie, then into the fall Henderson perch run, right through ice season and back full circle again. Grrrrrr !!!! Its blowing and its blowing hard, but those from the Oswego fleet that busted their way out have done very well with BT's, limits the norm. I talked to Gerry aboard the Dixie Dandy and they had a half dozen fish on their shakedown cruise, sticks off boards said Gerry. Chasin Tail' Andy took an early limit yesterday am as the wind switched to the SE and knocked down the 5 footers from the day before. Kevin on the Hat Trick had his box as he slipped outside the safety of the harbor. I am not too sure what is up today except for "me" as the Screamer and Big Fin boys felt the need to call and wake my a...... up at 6 am. They are on their way to O-Town again for the 3rd time in 3 weeks wrenching/rigging and polishing the 31 Baja "Team Screamer" Back to the lake action in Oswego and all the BT's, this spring is starting out as all the locals and out-a-towners have hoped it would. WITH A BANG !! A great mixed bag of fish daily, even 2 LT's in the 6 to 8 lb. range from Hat Trick so far. On Kevin's last driftboat trip (on the shoreline) he did yet another king, which makes 3 that I have heard of so far. That is great news.... The Atlantics are becoming "normal" and the larger than 2 year old BT's are mixed in nicely. It's looking good minus the conditions so far !!! (: (: ... ): ):.. Smithwicks are good, all sizes and all colors so far, blue/silver, black/silver, the darker cloroed ones as well. 100' behind your big boards best. Waters being worked are in tight to 30 fow, also shallow riggers 4 to 8 ft down with small DW s slims or standard stingers, in all honestly colors have not mattered much yet. It is sort of neat to see the variations of colors from fish being taken, you got your colored up drop backs and your chromer/green lake fish along with bright shiny "scales all over the place" Coho's. Just a great time of year !!! Thursday April 14, 2011
Shakedown cruise for my cousin Eric with me tagging along... (: Goal was to keep er on top, blow the dust off, get some gear wet and with any LUCK... just maybe manage to tackle with a few Oswego Brown Trout. So off we go, get to Wright's Landing and launch Eric's BT machine and head east. All is going well, left the dock shortly after 7am as planned and was surprised to see about a dozen boats already on the water. The boat ran well so Eric set lines and there we were ready for action.... Half Froze, excited as hell, boat purring along and all expectations suddenly switched to hoping a rod would go off. 10 minutes in nothing......30 minutes in nothing, finally for what seemed like "too long" the first rod flies off a big board (100' back) with a small Smithwick, but of course the 6# line got hung up in the release and that fish was gone along with my nice new shiny plug ): lol Another dry spell for 30 minutes and then for the next couple hours the BT's wanted to play. One after another, mostly 2 year olds but we had at least 4 (3) years olds as well (to almost 10 lbs) one last lull towards the end of our trip and a last hoorah of 4 or 5 more fish, ended our trip hooking about 20 fish and landing 75% of them. 1 small Atlantic and a few coho mixed in as well. Ran 3 lines off our boards and 1 rigger line, rigger would go and board lines would go, didn't much matter, Smithwicks and an Alewife and Chicken Wing Stinger. My best shakedown trip ever and back to the dock shortly after noon !!!!! Water temp was 45 to 47, our depths ranged from 6 to 22 fow, GPS speed 2.3 to 2.7, Slightly stained deeper today, I am sure that is changing daily with wind, rain and river flow. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tuesday April 12, 2011
Fishing in Oswego is starting, a few boats daily doing their shakedown cruises and putting a few lines in the water. They are taking mostly 2 year old BT's with an occasional 3 year old and also having some luck with a few Rainbows, Atlantics and Coho's mixed in. Sticks on top off long lines from boards the best, have even heard of 2 Kings taken in the 14 to 16 lb. class (: Hang tight anglers, its right around the corner !! ![]() ![]() "Tom are you rich yet, if not you should be!!"
